Griffins Spilt Conference Doubleheader With Cougars and Clippers

Philadelphia, PA – (4/10/2010) – Chestnut Hill College hosted a doubleheader of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action this afternoon, as the men's tennis team welcomed Caldwell College and Concordia College to campus. The Griffins opened the day with a 9-0 win over the Cougars before falling to the top rated Clippers, 8-1. Sophomore Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) was the lone Griffin to register a point against Concordia College.

 

Chestnut Hill College (11-9, 5-4) started out the afternoon with a strong performance against Caldwell College (0-9, 0-9). The Griffins swept doubles play without surrendering a point and they carried that momentum to singles play as they completed the sweep with six individual victories. Freshman Pat Joson (Old Bridge, NJ), sophomore Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA), freshman John Reading (Phoenixville, PA) and Avena all won singles (2, 3, 5, and 6) in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets. Freshman Joe Boyle (Doylestown, PA) took number one singles 6-0, 6-1 and sophomore David Negron (Philadelphia, PA) took number four singles 6-0, 6-3.

 

After a brief break, the Griffins battled Concordia College (14-2, 9-0) in a meeting of the #7 and #1 ranked teams in the East Region (NCAA 4/5/10). Avena won number six singles for the Griffins to spoil the shutout. He defeated sophomore Dane Ostilly (Westport, CT) 6-4, 6-4.

 

The men's tennis team continues their CACC schedule with a 4:00 p.m. match at Philadelphia University on Tuesday, April 13.
