Devils Sweep Singles to Even Season Series With Griffins

Philadelphia, PA – (4/8/2010) – The Chestnut Hill College grabbed the upper hand in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match with a sweep in doubles action. The University of the Sciences evened-up the season series on a 6-3 final after they responded with a sweep of their own in singles play. Freshman Pat Joson (Old Bridge, NJ) and sophomore David Negron (Philadelphia, PA) carried their individual matches to deciding sets and tiebreakers.

 

Joson fought till the bitter end at number two singles for Chestnut Hill College (10-8, 4-3). Junior Francisco Garcia (Balcarce, Buenos Aires, Argentina) took the opening set 7-6 (7-2) for the University of the Sciences (4-7, 4-3) and Joson matched him with a 7-6 (7-2) win in the second set. Garcia took the deciding set 10-9. Negron gave a strong effort as well, but lost number four singles 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5). The Devils won the remaining singles matches to come back for a 6-3 win.

 

The Griffins got off to a strong start in doubles play, registering points in all three matches, 3-0. Joson and freshman Joe Boyle (Doylestown, PA) defeated Garcia and sophomore Bill Fine (West Chester, PA) 8-6 at number one doubles. Junior Carson Richter (Lafayette Hill, PA) and sophomore Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) scored an 8-4 win at number two doubles. In the third doubles match, Negron and sophomore Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) won the tie breaker 7-3 to complete the sweep with a 9-8 victory.

 

The men's tennis team will host both Caldwell College and Concordia College in a doubleheader of CACC matches on Saturday, April 10. The Griffins will start with the Cougars at 11:00 a.m. and then play the Clippers at 4:00 p.m.
