Philadelphia, PA – (9/11/2010) – The Chestnut Hill College men's tennis team was victorious in their first match of the season, defeating Adelphi University 5-4 in this afternoon's tennis doubleheader. Unfortunately, the Griffin women could not complete the sweep as they lost to the Panthers, 5-4.

The men's tennis team trailed 2-1 after doubles play, as sophomore Patrick Villafuerte Joson (Old Bridge, PA) and freshman Juan Farah (Caracas, Venezuela) were the only Griffin doubles team to record a win. Joson and Farah won number two doubles to spirit Chestnut Hill College (1-0) to victories in four out of six singles flights. In individual play, Joson won the third flight 6-2, 6-2 while freshman Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) came from behind for a victory at number four singles. Junior Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) added the winning point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number five singles.

The women's team did not fare as well, losing 5-4 to Adelphi University (2-0). Freshman Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) and sophomore Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) were victorious in both formats for Chestnut Hill College (1-2). Dennis teamed with sophomore Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) for an 8-2 win at number one doubles. Parapouras and sophomore Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) won by the same score at number two doubles to give the Griffins a lead heading to individual play. Dennis won number two singles 6-2, 6-3 and Parapouras won number three singles 6-3, 6-1, but it was not enough to defeat the Panthers who won all remaining matches for the 5-4 win.

The men's tennis team plays next against Merrimack College on Friday, September 17, while the women's tennis team will resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 3:30 p.m. match against Caldwell College on Tuesday, September 14.
