Gbunblee Goal Carries Griffins over Lightning

9/16/2010 9:11:23 PM

Lafayette Hill, PA – (9/16/2010) – Freshman forward Darius Gbunblee (Philadelphia, PA) was the benefactor of a deflected pass, as Chestnut Hill College defeated Goldey-Beacom College 1-0, for their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the year. The Griffins overcame the Lightning despite a 22-12 shot discrepancy and a 9-2 corner kick deficit.

Chestnut Hill College (4-1, 2 -0) owned the early momentum, but Goldey-Beacom College (0-5, 0-2) sized control of the affair heading to intermission. Following halftime, the Lightning continued to test sophomore goalkeeper Michael Goldstein (Pennsauken, NJ) and with several acrobatic maneuvers he turned all offerings aside. After consecutive corner kick opportunities for the Lightning, the ball ricocheted from the Griffin box to midfield only to find the feet of sophomore midfielder Darryl Richardson (Washington Township, NJ). Richardson rushed the ball down the left side of the pitch, before striking a cross back toward center and coincidentally deflecting the ball off a Lightning defender to the awaiting strike of Gbunblee. Gbunblee's first collegiate goal gave the Griffins a 1-0 advantage, but it did not dissuade the Lightning.

Shots continued to fly, but Goldstein and the Griffin defense assumed control of the game as time wound down, carrying Chestnut Hill College to their second CACC win.

Forwards; sophomore Matt Bik (Vineland, NJ), senior Erlin Rodezno (Bladensburg, MD), and freshman Ken Thatcher Howell (Wilmington, DE) headlined the Lightning attack. Bik led with five shots, while Rodezno and Thatcher Howell record four apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela) made two saves in the loss (0-5).

The Griffins had several early opportunities on the effort of junior midfielder Gavin Reid (Dundee, Scotland), who led the team with three shots. Goldstein made 12 saves while earning his first shutout (4-1) of the season.

The men's soccer team remains home as they welcome Concordia College to the Chestnut Hill College Campus Field for a 3:00 p.m. CACC contest.
