Griffins End Lightning in Fourth Game To Capture First CACC Win

Wilmington, DE – (9/16/2010) – Recovering from a 25-18 first-game loss, Chestnut Hill College came back for a 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-22) triumph over Goldey-Beacom College in this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match. Freshman outside hitter Alex DePalma (Shillington, PA) and sophomore middle hitter Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) combined for 26 kills to power the Griffins to their second-ever CACC win.

 

Junior setter Roni Shaner (Elkton, MD) directed Goldey-Beacom College (3-3, 0-2) to a 25-18 win in the opening game. Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 1-2) returned the gesture with a 25-16 win in game two. Tight play continued into the third game where the Griffins narrowly escaped the Lightning for a 26-24 win. The fourth game marked the end for the Lightning as the Griffins finished the fray with a 25-22 victory.

 

The Lightning was led by Shaner, who totaled 22 assists, two aces, and 11 digs. Middle hitters, junior Rebecca Stoffer (Middletown, DE) and sophomore Catherine Howard (New Castle, DE) fed off of Shaner's play. Stoffer totaled seven kills and three blocks while Howard added five kills and four blocks.

 

Sophomore setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, DE) helped DePalma and Benson generate the Griffin offense with 29 assists and four aces. DePalma also had four aces, she finished with a season-high 11 kills. Benson led the Griffins with 15 kills and .429 (15K-6E-21TA) hitting percentage; both season-highs for her. Sophomore libero Elisabeth DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) was the defensive captain for the Griffins, hustling to 15 digs. Benson pitched in with three solo blocks.

 

The women's volleyball team travels to Aston, Pennsylvania this weekend for the Neumann University Tournament. The Griffins will first challenge Ursinus College in a 4:30 p.m. match on Friday, September 17.
