Lafayette Hill, PA – (9/4/2010) – Chestnut Hill College claimed the advantage in this afternoon's home opener on the very first shot. The Griffins endured Millersville University to a 2-0 victory thanks to a converted penalty kick midway through the second half. Freshman midfielder Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, NJ) located freshman forward Marykate McShane (Lebanon, PA) for the Griffins first tally just under three minutes into the affair. She later scored herself by completing a second-half penalty opportunity.
DiGiovanni drove the ball down the center of the pitch before finding McShane down the far side. McShane struck the ball to the bottom left of the net to register her first collegiate goal and put Chestnut Hill College (1-1) in charge of the contest, just 2:47 after the opening horn. The Griffins rode the momentum for a bit, but the Marauders slowly gained control of the contest as halftime approached.
Following the break play evened out, but at 65:40 a Griffin lob beat the Marauder defense and found a charging freshman forward Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin, NJ). Pizarro drew the foul before casting a shot on goal and DiGiovanni put the awarded penalty kick past sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Benson (Elizabethtown, PA) to extend the Griffin lead, 2-0. The Griffins controlled the contest from that point, as sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, DE) made all three necessary saves to earn her first win (1-1) and shutout of the season. Benson made four saves in the loss (0-2).
The women's soccer team travels to Bloomsburg University for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 8.
