Wildcats Wear down Women’s Volleyball

New Castle, DE – (10/27/2011) – Chestnut Hill College took Wilmington University to the wire in each of the first , three sets this evening, but the Wildcats edged the Griffins out 3-1 (27-25, 28-26, 23-25, 25-15). Wildcats junior outside hitter, Nicole Wiechecki (Wilmington, DE) led all Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) performers with 23.5 points.
 
Chestnut Hill College (13-16, 8-9) led Wilmington University (17-8, 13-5) in the early going, but the Wildcats narrowed the gap before scoring the opening set's final three points for a 27-25 win. The second set was tight the whole way with the Wildcats escaping for a 28-26 win. In the third set, the Griffins looked to rally their way back into the match with a 25-23 win, but the Wildcats answered just as quickly by earning the match victory with a 25-15 win in the fourth set.
 
Wiechecki totaled 17 kills on a .217 (17K-7E-46TA) hitting percentage while also contributing five aces, 17 digs, and three blocks to the Wildcat win. The Wildcat offense was directed by, a combined, 43 assists from freshman setter Kasey Couch (Woodbine, MD) and senior setter Shannon Rumple (Fallston, MD). Sophomores, outside hitter Brooke Foskey (Elkton, MD) and middle hitter Katie Shorter (Pasadena, MD) offered ten kills apiece, Shorter made seven blocks.
 
Freshman setter Sidney Chukuntarod (San Francisco, CA) provided the Griffin offense with 36 assists, helping sophomore outside hitter Alex DePalma (Shillington, PA) to 11 kills and junior middle hitter Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) and freshman right side Katie Schock (Allentown, PA) to nine kills apiece. All of them supported junior libero Liz DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) on defense. DiGregorio made 22 digs, DePalma hustled to 17 digs and two blocks, Chukuntarod made 14 digs and a block, and Benson supplied seven blocks.
 
The women's volleyball team welcomes Caldwell College to campus on Saturday, October 29, for their final home match of the season. Prior to the CACC match's 1:00 p.m. start, the Griffins will recognize seniors, Alyssa Miller (East Stroudsburg, PA), Katherine Tohanczyn (Hatfield, PA), and Megan Nadler (West Deptford, NJ) for their contributions to the Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball program.
