Box Score Lafayette Hill, PA – (10/5/2011) – Mercy College and Chestnut Hill College remained knotted at 2-2 as the second half horn sounded. At the start of overtime, the Griffins were the aggressor and after one unsuccessful assault, a second attack yielded a rebound goal from freshman forward
Pat Steger (La Plata, MD), and brought victory, 3-2. Fellow forwards, senior
Gavin Reid (Dundee, Scotland) and junior
Darryl Richardson Jr. (Turnersville, NJ) recorded the other two Griffin goals.
Despite holding a 22-12 shot advantage, Mercy College (5-3-1) trailed through a majority of the affair. Reid struck first for Chestnut Hill College (5-5-1), redirecting a cross from Richardson at 14:12. The Mavericks responded just over twenty minutes later (35:43) to even the contest heading to halftime, 1-1, but after intermission the Griffins pushed the tempo again. Chasing down a lob from sophomore defenseman
Darius Gbunblee (Philadelphia, PA), Richardson put the home team back ahead with a drive past the Maverick keeper, 2-1. Fortunately for the Mavericks, a brilliant individual effort down the left sideline by junior midfielder William Koki (Aurora, CO) tied the contest back up, 2-2, at 63:21. Following regulation, the theme continued with the Griffins offering the first strikes of the extra frame. The first assault from sophomore forward
Mushe Wamulume (Media, PA) was blocked by a Maverick defender, but the next by Steger found goal and a Griffin win.
Graduate forward Ben Latchford (Birmingham, England) headed the first Maverick goal off a throw-in and junior goalkeeper Nick Papas (Castleton, NY) made two saves in the loss.
Reid, Wamulume, and Steger each fired three shots, but in a strong team effort the Griffins received contributions from all participants. Freshman goalkeeper Dave Sullivan (Kutztown, PA) made seven saves in his first collegiate win (1-2).
The men's soccer team returns to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a trip to Felician College on Saturday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
