Last Second Tip Topples Griffins

Box Score Philadelphia, PA – (12/30/2011) – A Bloomsburg University foul put sophomore guard Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, PA) at the line with a chance to give Chestnut Hill College the lead with less than ten seconds remaining. Bogans converted both free throws, 86-85, but on the ensuing possession senior center Larry Webster III (Elkton, MD) tipped-in the Huskies original game-winning attempt at the last second to capture an 87-86 victory for the visitors. Junior guard Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ) led six Griffins in double figures with 19 points.
 
Chestnut Hill College (10-5) controlled the lead from the start of the second half, but a late 8-0 Bloomsburg University (9-2) run brought all things even at 80-80. A three-point basket from freshman guard Luke Dickson (Pitman, NJ) extended the Griffins second half lead to eight, 80-72, with 3:43 left to play. An immediate response came with a layup from Webster and consecutive buckets from sophomore guard Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport, PA), allowing senior guard Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD) to bring the score even with two free throws at 2:14. A pick-and-roll landed senior forward Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA) a clean dunk of the following Griffin possession, 82-80, but it was not enough to dissuade the Huskies. A layup from junior guard Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ) gave the Huskies their first second-half lead with 20 seconds to play and left Bogans to set the offense for the Griffins last shot. He drew the reach-in foul and converted the necessary free throws, but Webster last-second heroics helped the Huskies escape with the one-point victory.
 
Jordan led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-16 (62.5%) shooting. He also led the Huskies on the glass with ten rebounds. Four others finished in double figures; Webster and Njoku both recorded 14 points, junior forward Ed Hall (Spencerville, PA) added 12 points and Johnson provided 11 points. In addition to his point production, Johnson was the point-man for the Huskies totaling 12 assists and five steals.
 
DiRugeris was 5-of-11 (45.5%) from the floor and 8-of-8 (100.0%) at the charity stripe to lead a 22-of-25 (88.0%) team free throw performance. His backcourt partner, senior guard Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA), was effective in all facets of competition providing 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Comas offered his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and ten rebounds. Freshman forward Alssene Saintilus (Irvington, NJ) totaled 11 points and led the Griffin defensive effort with a block and two steals. Bogans and Dickson recorded ten points apiece.
 
The men's basketball team returns to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, January 3, with an 8:00 p.m. home contest against the University of the Sciences.
