Bronxville, NY – (9/24/2011) – Chestnut Hill College endured another five-set Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match, this one to a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-10) triumph over Concordia College (NY). Behind the play of sophomore outside hitter Alex DePalma (Shillington, PA) and freshman right side Katie Schock (Allentown, PA), the Griffins kept one step ahead of the Clippers before earning their second league win with a decisive fifth-set victory.
Schock pushed Chestnut Hill College (7-8, 2-3) to a 25-20 win in the opening set, leading the Griffins with four kills in a 13-8 closing run. Concordia College (NY) (0-11, 0-5) led the whole way in the set second and evened the match with a 25-20 win of their own, before the Griffins once again grabbed the advantage with another 25-20 win in the third set. Determined to stay alive at home, the Clippers fought for a 25-16 win in the fourth set, but it was the Griffins who decided the outcome, rallying for a 15-10 fifth-set victory following an early timeout.
The Clippers were led by senior outside hitter Amanda Margedant (La Habra Heights, CA) and sophomore setter Hillary Hoffman (East Meadow, NY). Margedant recorded 13 kills, 17 digs, and three blocks, while Hoffman supplied 38 assists. Junior middle hitter Chelsea Zurcher (Crofton, MD) helped with ten kills and two blocks, but the Clipper defense was led by five block from junior outside hitter Juliann Gillespie (Clarkson, MI) and 13 digs from sophomore hitter Alexis Balyeat (Elkhart, IN).
DePalma and Schock totaled 14 kills apiece. Schock was more efficient with a .290 (14K-5E-31TA) hitting percentage, while DePalma spotted three aces, and hustled to 15 digs. Freshman setter Sidney Chukuntarod (San Francisco, CA) served a playmaker with 41 assists and junior libero Liz DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) captained the defense with 18 digs.
The women's volleyball team continues their CACC schedule with a 7:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences on Tuesday, September 27.
