East Stroudsburg, PA – (9/2/2011) – Chestnut Hill College opened this season with a trip to East Stroudsburg University to join the Warriors, Lincoln University, and Caldwell College for a season-opening tournament. The Griffins scored a win in their first match, defeating Lincoln University 3-0 (25-5, 25-19, 25-9). Sophomore outside hitter Alex DePalma (Shillington, PA) filled up the box score with six kills, two aces, nine digs, and a block.

 

Chestnut Hill College (1-0) got the 2011 season off to a good start with a dominant 25-5 win in the opening set. Lincoln University (0-1) looked to even the score in the second set, but the Griffins managed to keep the Lion rally at bay with a 25-19 win. The third settled was settled 25-9, landing the Griffins their third and final point for the 3-0 sweep. Junior middle hitter Cassie Benson (Rosamond, CA) helped DePalma at the net, leading the Griffins with eight kills while also contributing two blocks to the defensive effort. Freshman right side Katie Schock (Allentown, PA) also joined in on the attack with six kills. They all benefitted from the direction of freshman setter Sidney Chukuntarod (San Francisco, CA), who provided eight assists in addition to spotting three aces. Defensively, junior libero Liz DiGregorio (Conshohocken, PA) captained the Griffins while making 14 digs.

 

The women's volleyball team continues play at the East Stroudsburg University Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, September 3, with matches against Caldwell College, 12:00 p.m., and East Stroudsburg University.
