Freshmen Lead Griffins in Loss at Post University

Box Score Waterbury, Conn. – (10/13/2012) – Continuing their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule, Chestnut Hill College visited Post University for today's match. The Eagles were efficient on their home court, dispatching the Griffins 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22) with a .297 (47K-14E-111TA) team hitting percentage. Freshmen, middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) and outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.) led the Griffin effort with nine kills apiece.
 
The opening set was tied as late as 19-19, but a late Post University (7-10, 6-3) run led by graduate outside hitter Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) She killed three of the Eagles last six points for the 25-19 win and the early advantage. Chestnut Hill College (7-14, 3-7) took the first couple points of the second set, 2-0, only for the Eagles to thunder back to a 12-6 lead before closing out the set on a 25-16 spread. The Eagles brought the match to a close with a 25-22 win in the third set, as they rallied from a 15-12 deficit to knot the set 17-17 before putting together a 8-5 winning run.
 
Reynolds and senior outside hitter Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) both totaled 11 kills for the Eagles. Reynolds hit better (.375, 11K-2E-24TA) and pitched in on defense with an ace and three blocks. Sophomore setter Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) supplied 36 assists while graduate outside hitter Vanessa Ramos (Milford, Conn.) anchored the Eagle defense with 15 digs.
 
Biro proved as the Griffins tip performer, totaling ten points on her .429 (9K-3E-14TA) hitting percentage and two blocks. Gruver match her nine kills with nine digs. The Griffin offense received 22 assists, two kills, and an ace from senior setter Courtney Gallo (Wilmington, Del.). Junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.) chipped in on both sides of the net with five kills, ten digs, and two blocks.
 
The women's volleyball team remains on the road as they continue their CACC schedule with a 7:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, October 17.
