Griffins Fall Short In First CACC Championship

10/22/2012 12:12:00 AM

Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/21/2012) – Early in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship it appeared as though Chestnut Hill College had a chance to overthrow the perennial league champions, Concordia College (NY), but the Clippers seized control of the match late in doubles play, before scoring three of the first four singles matches for a 5-2 win. Senior Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and junior Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) were among those who earned all-tournament recognition.

Dennis and sophomore Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) gave #3 Chestnut Hill College (11-4) the first point of the CACC Championship Match on an 8-6 victory, but #1 Concordia College (NY) lived up to their reputation with fourth straight league championship on a 5-1 run. The enthusiasm of the home crowd fed the Griffins at the start, but eventually the Clippers assumed control of the title bout with wins at number one doubles, 8-4, and number three doubles, 8-6.

The Clippers momentum fueled singles competition, as the defending league champs secured victory with wins at number four singles, 6-0, 6-2, number six singles, 6-2, 6-0, and number three singles, 6-2, 6-3. Shcherbakova earned the Griffins lone singles point with a 7-5, 6-2 win at number one singles.

The women's tennis team will resume their 2012-2013 season with a February spring trip to Florida.
