Chestnut Hill College (5-12-1, 3-8) kept the ball in the Holy Family University (8-7-2, 6-5-1) for a majority of the first half and held a 10-7 in shots, but no strikes from either side found goal and the contest reached halftime in a scoreless tie, 0-0. Scoring came after intermission, as the Tigers broke the silence at 58:27 when senior forward Dodji Freitas (Philadelphia, Pa.) headed a throw-in from junior midfielder Ahmed Algayar (Philadelphia, Pa.) to goal, 1-0. The Tigers lead increased to 2-0 at 64:09 on an own goal as a corner kick deflected into the goal off the back of a Griffin defenseman. Looking for any opportunity to get back into the game, the Griffins pressured the Tigers with every possession. It paid off in the 78
th minute (77:24), when Johns struck a foul restart from 40 yards out to the feet of a streaking Pernice, 2-1. The intensity at Victory Field #1 reached its pinnacle, but it was soon extinguished on a cross-field connection between sophomore midfielders Aiah Mbriwa (Abington, Pa.) and Justin Massaro (Warminster, Pa.), 3-1 (84:29).
Freitas' three shots led the Tigers 12-shot effort, while senior goalkeeper Kelly Diaz (Palisades Park, N.J.) made five saves and earned the win in 77:24 minutes of play.
Sophomore forward
Patrick Steger (La Plata, Md.) recorded five of the Griffins 18 shots and Pernice totaled four shots to headline the offense's production. Goldstein took the loss, despite making three saves in 88:33 minutes.
The men's soccer team concludes the 2012 season at 5-12-1 overall and 3-8 in the CACC.
