Women Earn Griffin Tennis Split With Catawba College

Hilton Head, SC – (3/6/2012) – Chestnut Hill College tennis earned another split in their second day of competition in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Both sides squared off against Catawba College with the women's side earning the victory once again, 5-4. The Indians won the men's match 8-1 with a number one doubles team of freshman Mike Humes (Medford, NJ) and sophomore Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) earning the Griffins lone point, 8-4.
 
Humes and Ceniceros gave Chestnut Hill College (3-2) early aspirations, winning the top doubles flight 8-4. Unfortunately, Catawba College (11-5) swept the remaining doubles matches and all of singles play for the 8-1 win. Humes was the only Griffin to force a tiebreaker in individual play, dropping number one singles 7-5, 1-6, 10-4.
 
On the women's side, play was much more competitive. Chestnut Hill College (15-3) managed to grab a 2-1 lead after doubles play by winning the top two team matches. Junior Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and sophomore Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) won number one doubles 8-0, while juniors, Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) and Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) won number two doubles 8-5. The trend followed in singles play with the Griffins wining the top flights. Shcherbakova won number one singles 6-1, 6-2. Dennis took number two singles 6-2, 6-2, and Parapouras collected the win at number three singles, 6-0, 6-1.
 
The men's and women's tennis teams challenge Catholic University of America next in Hilton Head. The dual match is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start on Wednesday, March 7.
