Bronxville, NY – (4/21/2012) – Holding a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, Philadelphia University won the three necessary singles matches to win this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semifinal 5-2, and advance past Chestnut Hill College to the league championship. Sophomore
Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) was the only Griffin to score an individual victory, while freshman
Sammy Atri (Mexico City, Mexico) and sophomore
Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) were responsible for the Griffins doubles victory.
Atri and Ceniceros scored an 8-4 win at number three doubles, but it was not enough to detour Philadelphia University (10-11), who claimed the top two team flights before defeating Chestnut Hill College (11-11) with three singles wins. Ram seniors, Manoli Sgouros (Forest Hills, NY) and Adrian Torroella-Cruz (Gainesville, FL), made a statement with an 8-1 win over Pham and freshman
Mike Humes (Medford, NJ) at number one doubles. Junior Kyle Burke (Wakefield, RI) and senior Ryan Christopher (Pottstown, PA) followed with an 8-2 win over senior
Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) and sophomore
Michael Pecoraro (Towson, MD) at number two doubles. The Rams carried the momentum into singles play where Torroella-Cruz topped Humes 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at number one singles, Burke defeated Ceniceros 6-4, 7-6 (6-4) at number three singles, and Christopher bested Twyman 6-3, 6-4 at number four singles. The remainder of the matches were left unfinished with the Rams clinching victory, 5-2, and advancing to face #1 Concordia College (NY) in tomorrow's CACC Championship.
The men's tennis team, along with the Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team, awaits a possible at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship Tournament.
