Griffins Host Knights In an Afternoon Of Ranked East Region Tennis

Philadelphia, PA – (4/7/2012) – Queens College's tennis teams visited campus for afternoon of competition against the Griffins, as the Griffins hosted the Knights in a dual match of ranked east region rivals. In the afternoon's first match, the Knights #1 women's side defeated the Griffins #5 women's side 7-2, which was followed by the Knights #2 men's side defeating the Griffins #7 men's side 9-0. Juniors, Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) earned singles victories to score the Griffins only points.
 
Queens College (10-2) won number one doubles 8-2 and the other two team flights by 8-0 finals to get a strong start in this afternoon's men's match. Chestnut Hill College (9-8) looked to rally in singles play, but they could not gain any ground. Freshman Mike Humes (Medford, NJ) lost number one singles 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) took a 6-2, 6-1 defeat at number two singles. The Griffins fought hard, but fared no better in the remaining singles matches.
 
Earlier in the day, the Chestnut Hill College (18-6) women took their best shot at Queens College (15-0), but they only came away with two points. The Knights took number one and number three doubles 8-3, after winning number two doubles 8-2. Shcherbakova and Parapouras gave the Griffins hope with wins at number one and number three singles, respectively, but the Knights won all the remaining singles flights. Shcherbakova won number one singles 6-3, 6-3, while Parapouras took number three singles 7-5, 6-2.
 
The men's tennis team continues play at home with a 1:00 p.m. match against Dowling College on Monday, April 9, while the women's team finishes their season at the University of the Sciences with a 3:00 p.m. match on Friday, April 13.
