Griffins Sink Clippers, Score Second CACC Win in Sorgenti

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – (9/22/2012) – Chestnut Hill College finished strong at the net all afternoon to defeat Concordia College (NY) 3-0 (25-20, 25-7, 25-20) for their second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory. Freshman setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) spread the ball around to an efficient front line, as junior outside hitter Alexandra DePalma (Shillington, Pa.), junior middle hitter Mary Markowski (Parkton, Md.), and freshman middle hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) all hit over .300 with at least six kills.
 
DePalma and Biro welcomed Concordia College (NY) (1-8, 1-2) to campus with strong opening sets. Chestnut Hill College (6-8, 2-1) hit .345 (13K-3E-29TA) as a team with DePalma scoring six kills on a .417 (6K-1E-12TA) hitting percentage and Biro killing three balls on a .750 (3K-0E-4TA) hitting percentage. After winning the first set 25-20, the Griffins frustrated the Clippers to a 25-7 loss in the second set. Markowski was the Griffins driving force in the third set, killing five balls on a .571 (5K-1E-7TA) hitting percentage and powering the home team to a 25-20 win.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Leina Braga (Salvador, Brazil) led the Clippers with nine kills. She was supported by 21 assists from junior setter Hillary Hoffman (East Meadow, N.Y.) and ten digs by junior outside hitter Irina Impellittiere (Cold Spring, N.Y.).
 
DePalma topped ten kills for the fifth time this season as she total 11 kills on a .325 (11K-3E-25TA) hitting percentage in today's match. Her effort was backed by nearly flawless two-way play from Biro and Markowski. Biro recorded seven kills on a .600 (7K-1E-10TA) hitting percentage and assisted on four blocks, while Markowski posted six kills on a .556 (6K-1E-9TA) hitting percentage to along with her four solo blocks. Tamsing finished with 28 assists and eight digs. Freshmen, outside hitter Abby Gruver (Coplay, Pa.) and libero Deanna Bianchini (Blue Bell, Pa.) anchored the Griffin defense with 12 and ten digs, respectively.  
 
The women's volleyball team continues their CACC schedule with a 6:00 p.m. match at Philadelphia University on Tuesday, September 25.
