Box Score Lakewood, N.J. – (10/22/2013) – The hosting Lightning struck first, but a more aggressive Chestnut Hill College unit overcame Goldey-Beacom College's initial strike and secured a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory with a plethora of first-half corner kick opportunities and a hat trick from freshman forward Charles O'Connell (Secaucus, N.J). O'Connell's first score tied the contest just before halftime, his second came just ten minutes after intermission, and his third, just four minutes after that, provided the Griffins with breathing room for the final 30 minutes of play.

After an opening stanza of Chestnut Hill College (6-8-2, 5-4-1) corner kicks, each team was thwarted by a series of offside whistles before Goldey-Beacom College (2-13-1, 1-8-1) deposited the contest's first goal at 19:55, 1-0. Sophomore forward Ernest Ackah (Smyrna, Del.) scored the Lightnings goal from a difficult angle after receiving the ball on a flick from senior midfielder Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil). Following the tally the Griffins looked to even the score by feeding junior forward Channing Couillard (Jacksonville, Fla.), but their efforts were fruitless until freshman defenseman Matthew McLeod (Sewell, N.J.) tapped the ball to O'Connell for a successful strike from 20 yards out at 42:10, 1-1.

The Lightning offered the second half's first three shots and tied the final shot spread, 11-11, with an 8-6 edge in the period. But O'Connell made the most of his attempts for the Griffins, scoring a loose ball at 56:46, 2-1, and bouncing a feed from senior forward Mushe Wamulume (Media, Pa.) over the Lightning keeper's head just four minutes later, 60:46, 3-1. Freshman goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) (6-7-1) and the Griffin defense held the Lightning at bay for the final 29:14. Jackson made three saves in the period and four in the game while the rest of the Lightning strikes sailed high, wide, or into a Griffin defender. Couillard led the Griffins with five shots, but O'Connell was efficient, recording his hat trick on just four shots.

The men's soccer team plays their next CACC contest on Saturday, October 26, when they visit Bloomfield College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
