Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (12/4/2013) – Junior forward
Filip Sekulic (Danilovgrad, Montenegro) came off the Chestnut Hill College bench to help junior guard
Christian Walck (Lancaster, Pa.) establish a 37-33 Griffin halftime advantage. But the Rams superior second-half effort tied the contest before the six-minute mark, 58-58 at 6:28, and eventually brought the home team an eight-point Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory, 76-68.
Chestnut Hill College (1-7, 0-2) shot 53.8% (14-of-26) from the field and outrebounded Philadelphia University (5-3, 2-1) 16-11 in the first half, pacing the Rams to a 37-33 halftime spread. The Rams owned a narrow 10-9 advantage before the 12-minute mark (12:14), but after Sekulic came off the bench the tide turned in the Griffins favor. He scored seven straight Griffin points before getting contributions from freshman
Carson Murphy (Mohawk, N.Y.) and others in an 18-11 stretch that left them up six points, 27-21, with 6:23 remaining in the period. A brief Ram reprise threatened to diminish the deficit, but Walck saw to it that the Griffins held a 37-33 halftime advantage by scoring their final seven points of the frame.
After halftime, the Griffins looked inside to Murphy and junior center
Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, Pa.). They helped max the Griffins advantage at 11 points, 48-37, in the first five minutes of the period (14:58), but this time the Rams had an answer in sophomore forwards Peter Alexis (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) and Derek Johnson (Conshohocken, Pa.), and junior guard Nick Schlitzer (Pottsville, Pa.). The Rams frontcourt duo combined for 26 second-half points while Schlitzer added 13 points of his own in the closing frame, erasing the Griffin advantage and carrying the Rams to their eight-point victory.
Each side put four players in double figures, but Johnson led all participants with 25 points. Schiltzer totaled 20 points and sophomore guard Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del.) offered 14 points while Alexis contributed a double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds, in addition to leading the Rams defensive effort with two blocks.
Walck and Radtke each finished with 15 points atop the Griffin box score. Walck also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds while also providing three assists and a steal. Murphy totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a block. Sekulic scored all 12 of his points in the first half and recorded seven rebounds.
The men's basketball team continues their CACC schedule at Bloomfield College with a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, December 7.
