Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – (2/23/2013) – The 2013 season opened this afternoon for the Chestnut Hill College men's lacrosse team, as the Griffins traveled to Syracuse, New York, to challenge #3 Le Moyne College in a meeting of two nation's top ten teams. Junior attack
Michael Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) netted the contest's first goal, but the Dolphins scored the next nine before claiming a 16-3 victory. Melnychenko and senior attack
Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) totaled two points apiece to lead the Griffin effort.
After Melnychenko's initial tally, Chestnut Hill College (0-1) enjoyed a one goal lead for nearly eight minutes of play. Le Moyne College (1-0) would tie the contest at 5:27 in the first quarter, 1-1, before shutting the Griffins out 7-0 in the second quarter, 8-1, and recording the first goal of the second half for an 9-1 edge late in the third frame (3:40). Morlock interrupted the Dolphin run with back-to-back goals at 0:54 in the third quarter, 9-2, and 13:30 in the fourth quarter, 9-3, but the ground gained by the Griffins was quickly lost behind the Dolphins 7-0 closing run.
Junior attack Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y.) led the Dolphins with six goals, an assist, and two ground balls. He was helped by four goals and a ground ball from sophomore midfielder Joe Coarapi (Liverpool, N.Y.) and a dominate face-off performance from junior midfielder Kam Bumpas (Marshfield, Mass.); 14-of-17 (82.4%) with eight ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Jeff White (Buffalo, N.Y.) totaled six saves and two ground balls in the win (53:11).
Senior defensemen,
Thomas Carfagna (Laurys Station, Pa.) and
Michael Miskell (Auburn, N.Y.) headlined the Griffins defensive effort that back Melnychenko and Morlock. Carfagna finished with four ground balls, a caused turnover, and a 2-of-5 (40.0%) effort in the face-off circle. Miskell recorded three ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior goalkeeper
Dakota Maurer (Lititz, Pa.) made 15 saves and grabbed a ground ball in the loss (54:41).
The men's lacrosse team remains on the road as they travel to California this week for contests against Notre Dame de Namur University, 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, and Dominican University of California, 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.
