Box Score Bloomsburg, Pa. – (9/18/2013) – Suffering a 2-0 setback at Bloomsburg University this evening, a late push from Chestnut Hill College was not enough to match two early first-half Husky scores and the goalkeeping of senior Bernie Roell (Douglassville, Pa.). Junior forward
Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Columbia) led the Griffins second-half charge and the topped the box score with four shots.
The home side controlled the early play as Bloomsburg University (3-2) took the initial lead on a deflected cross-field pass from senior defenseman Anthony Moreno (Richboro, Pa.) at 8:53. A Chestnut Hill College (2-3) offside gave the Huskies their scoring opportunity with Moreno setting up freshman midfielder Derrick Orendorff (Elizabethtown, Pa.) for a touch goal, 1-0. The Griffins tried to slow the Huskies and assert their own game plan. But shots were hard to come by in the first half, favoring the home side 7-2. A Huskey assault at the 22-minute mark would eventually overwhelm the Griffin defense, as senior forward Fran Miller (Doylestown, Pa.) ended a series of Huskey shots with a second goal at 22:38, 2-0. The Griffin then looked to find an answer with a few long serves, but they came away empty handed and still searching for a remedy in the second half. Amaya, junior forward
Channing Couillard (Jacksonville, Fla.), and freshman forward
Charles O'Connell (Secaucus, N.J.) looked to be that cure, but they found no success on several early shots. The Griffins took 11 shots in the frame total, making up for their lack of first-half offense, but failing to find goal before the 90
th minute.
With Miller directing play, Orendorff and junior midfielder Nate Conrad (Enola, Pa.) led the Huskies with three shots apiece. Roell made eight saves in the shutout (3-2).
Amaya had both of the Griffins first-half shots and he attempted two more in the second while receiving additional support from Couillard and O'Connell, who combined for five shots off the bench. Junior goalkeeper
Travis Powers (Hewitt, N.J.) totaled seven saves in the defeat (0-1).
The men's soccer team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with an 8:00 p.m. contest at Felician College on Saturday, September 21.
