Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (9/24/2013) – In less than a week, Chestnut Hill College has toppled two nationally ranked Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponents as the Griffins shut out #13 Wilmington University 3-0 in this afternoon contest. A connection between senior forward
Mushe Wamulume (Media, Pa.) and junior forward
Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) earned the Griffins a 1-0 halftime lead, which quickly turned into a 3-0 victory with two opportunistic, mid-second half goals from freshman forward
Charles O'Connell (Secaucus, N.J.).
After getting a feeling for their opponent, Chestnut Hill College (3-3-1, 2-1-1 CACC) capitalized on a Wilmington University (6-2, 3-1 CACC) offside with a useful restart down the right side of the field. The ball eventually worked its way to the feet of Wamulume, who touched it to the head of Amaya for a 1-0 Griffin lead at 38:09. The Wildcats recorded the last two shots of the first half, but one found freshman goalkeeper
James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) and the other sailed high. The visitors continued to press in the second half, firing off seven shots of the period before a brief stanza resulted in a rebound goal. Off a Wildcat foul, an initial strike from sophomore midfielder
Dominic Pernice (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) took the goalkeeper out of position and opened the goal for O'Connell at 71:31, 2-0. Just less than seven minutes later, he did it again, scoring a deflected serve off the Wildcat defense at 78:29, 3-0.
Topping a 20-12 shot advantage, sophomore defender Lance Berry (Bear, Del.) led the Wildcats with six shots. In goal, sophomore Frank Hall (Newark, Del) and senior Chad Jenkins (Newark, Del.) split time. Hall took the loss and made one save in the first half, while Jenkins stopped three Griffin assaults in the second half.
Sophomore defender
Tristan Johns (Marmora, N.J.) and senior forward
Robert Stocklin (Mount Laurel, N.J.) provided some early offense for the Griffins, but O'Connell topped the Griffins box score with four shots. Jackson made eight saves in the shutout victory (3-2-1).
The men's soccer team continues CACC play on Saturday, September 28, when they welcome Dominican College for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
