Pathers Overpowering in Women’s Soccer Home Opener

9/5/2013 11:22:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (9/5/2013) – An early second-half goal gave Chestnut Hill College an opportunity to derail Adelphi University from a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, three more Panther strikes followed the Griffins lone goal and separated the visitors for a 5-1 win. Junior midfielder Katherine Williams (Pennsauken, N.J.) accounted for the Griffin goal and led the home team's opening effort with four shots.

The contest's initial push came from Chestnut Hill College (0-1), but Adelphi University (1-0) gradually gained momentum before controlling possession after their first goal. At 13:47, junior midfielder Michelle Brown (Sydney, Australia) took the ball deep in the Griffins backfield before serving a pass to the awaiting foot of sophomore forward Olivia Czavar (West Hempstead, N.Y.). Despite several chances, the Griffins held the Mavericks to a 1-0 halftime lead behind a strong defensive effort and several quality stops by junior goalkeeper Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.).

The Panthers momentum boiled over in the second half, as the visitors survived a brief Griffin reprise before sealing the victory with three successive scores. Their second goal came just ten minutes into the closing period, 55:56, and would have put the Griffins away early if not for an advantageous exchange between senior forward Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin, N.J.) and Williams. An error by the Panther defense allowed Pizarro to win an opportunistic possession and feed a hustling Williams for the Griffins lone goal at 64:37. But, the Panthers were relentless in their pursuit of the Griffin goal, scoring goals at 70:57, 80:08, and 82:01 to secure the win.

A cohesive Panther offense provided five assists on five tallies. Senior midfielder Amiee Goldstein (Monroe, N.Y.) served as their primary playmaker with two helpers. She first initiated the tick-tack-toe tally by freshman forward Sarah Rose Barone Stern (Staten Island, N.Y.) that gave the Mavericks a 2-0 edge early in the second half (55:56) and later found sophomore midfielder Bianca Lastra (East Patchogue, N.Y.) for the Mavericks fourth goal at 80:08, 4-1. Junior goalkeeper Sam Whitney (West Islip, N.Y.) made two saves in the win (1-0).

Williams' tally was the second her second collegiate career, while Pauls made 14 saves despite taking the loss (0-1) for the Griffins. Senior forward Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, N.J.), senior defender Brittany Boles (Broomall, Pa.), and sophomore defender Christina Mangeri (Muttontown, N.Y.) accounted for the other three Griffin shots.

The women's soccer team plays next at Millersville University, when they join the Marauders for a 4:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 7.
