Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/10/2014) – The Griffins came away with two wins today as Chestnut Hill College dismissed the West Chester University men's and women's tennis teams by identical 8-1 finals. The Griffin men retired their opponents first, sweeping doubles play before finishing off the Golden Rams as individuals. The opposite could be said for the Griffin women, who only dropped number one doubles before claiming victory in all six singles flights.
The Chestnut Hill College (3-1) men took a commanding lead of their match with West Chester University (1-1) on a 3-0 doubles effort. Senior
Michael Humes (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and junior
Kevin Taylor (Burlington, N.J.) were the first to finish their match, earning an 8-4 at number two doubles. Sophomore
Pedro Oranges de Figueredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman
Pedro Festugato Regalin (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) won the second flight by the same score, 8-4, before freshman
Jonathan Ducretot (Antibes, France) and senior
Steven Say (Cannes, France) completed the sweep with their 8-5 win at number one doubles.
The only hiccup for the Griffins came at number six singles, where the Golden Rams earned the last point of the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win. The Griffins won the remaining individual matchups in order with Humes winning number one singles 6-1, 6-2, Say securing number two singles 6-4, 6-0, Oranges overcoming at number three singles 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-7, freshman
Lucas Bocaletto (Itatiba, Brazil) battling at number four singles 6-1, 6-0, and Regalin recording the point at number five singles, 3-6, 6-1, 11-9.
On the women's side, Chestnut Hill College (6-2) separated for their 8-1 victory with a sweep of singles play. Following wins at number two doubles, 8-0, and number three doubles, 8-2, the Griffins surrendered a 9-7 number-one doubles loss before putting West Chester University (2-1) away behind six straight singles wins. Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) was the first to score with her 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at number two singles. Senior
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at number three singles while junior
Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) finished close behind her with a 2-6, 6-0, 10-7, triumph at number four singles. Freshman
Hannah Hills (Maize, Kan.) and senior
Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) won the Griffins next two points with Hills taking the sixth singles flights, 6-1, 6-3, and Dawson taking number one singles 7-6 (7-0), 4-6, 6-1. The match closed with a 6-0, 6-4, fifth-singles win from junior
Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.).
The men's tennis team has completed their fall schedule with a 3-1 record, while the women prepare for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament with a 4:00 p.m. home match against Molloy College on Wednesday, October 15.
