Griffins Tame Tigers For First Time Behind Jaffe

10/14/2014 9:25:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/14 /2014) – Behind junior captain Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil), the Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team did something it had never done before tonight, knocking off visiting Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Holy Family University for the first time since joining National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II in 2007. Jaffe sandwiched a pair of assists – one to freshman midfielder Joseph Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.), another to junior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) - around a penalty kick goal of his own to lead the Griffins to a 3-1 victory and snap the Tigers' seven-game winning streak in the series.

With its watershed win, Chestnut Hill College (6-6-1, 5-2-1) improved to 4-0 in conference home games and jumped into a three-way tie for second place in the CACC with Philadelphia University and Dominican College (N.Y.). As has been the case for much of the season, Jaffe was the driving force behind the result.

The captain's through ball threaded the defense and found Casaletto at the left post, and the freshman found the back of the net for the second time in as many games at 23:01, 1-0. Holy Family University (5-5-4, 2-4-3) quickly netted the equalizer, with junior forward Aiah Mbriwa (Abington, Pa.) taking advantage of a Griffin turnover in the back end and beating sophomore goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) at 25:47, 1-1.

Chestnut Hill College went right back to work, as senior midfielder Michael Hester (Seaport, N.Y.) made a run and was brought down in the box, granting the hosts a penalty kick. For the second straight game, Jaffe converted from the spot, chipping Tigers goalie Richard Ongaro (Columbus, N.J.) to make it 2-1 Griffins at 32:06.

After the Griffins logged an 8-3 advantage in shots in the first half, the Tigers came out firing after intermission, taking the first six shots of the second period. Jackson was forced to make a pair of saves during a flurry in which Holy Family University had three cracks at the Griffin goal in just over a minute. After stopping a shot by senior defenseman Kevan Melly (Hatboro, Pa.), 51:59, Jackson dismissed the Tigers' best chance at an equalizer, diving to his right to steer wide of the post a powerful shot by sophomore midfielder Christopher Tracey (Abington, Pa.), who saw a bouncing ball deflect straight to him in the center of the box.

The Griffins retained their slim advantage until the 71st minute, when Jaffe dribbled into the box and passed off to Amaya in the left corner. The junior forward plugged the lower right corner of the net with a left-footed shot for his seventh goal of the season, 3-1 (70:18).

The Tigers nearly pulled one back at 81:08, but sophomore defenseman Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany) stepped in front of a shot that was ticketed for the back of the net to keep the margin at 3-1. It was the second spectacular defensive play by the Griffin backline; sophomore Ricardo Luna III (Odenton, Md.) raced back to strip Mbriwa of a golden scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute.

Tracey led the Tigers attack with three shots, while Mbriwa, junior Tom Kostick (Philadelphia, Pa.), and freshman Mariano Cepeda (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded two apiece as Holy Family University compiled a 15-10 edge in that category to go along with a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Ongaro made three saves in taking the loss (5-5-4).

With two more assists in his third game of at least four points this season, Jaffe moved into a tie for the CACC lead in assists (7). He is one of only three players to rank inside the conference's top five in goals (7; tied for fifth), assists (7; tied for first), and points (21, fourth).

Jaffe took four shots to lead Chestnut Hill College. Joseph Casaletto recorded two, and Fussen, Hester, Amaya and junior midfielder Matthew Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.) attempted one each. Jackson made five saves to pick up the win in net (6-5-1).

The Griffins return to CACC play on Saturday, October 18, at Nyack College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
