Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/16/2014) – Freshman forward
Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.) gave Chestnut Hill College hope on her first collegiate goal with 28:11 remaining, 2-1, but a late tally by Holy Family University quenched the Griffins comeback effort and sealed a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory for the visiting Tigers this afternoon.
Chestnut Hill College (2-10, 2-6) battled Holy Family University (8-4, 7-2) to a scoreless stalemate for most of the first half. Sophomore forward
Alissa Battaglia (Merrick, N.Y.) fired off four shots in the span of three minutes early on, forcing a save from Tigers goalkeeper, sophomore Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa.). The Griffins, however, were unable to get off another shot before the visitors broke the ice just before intermission on the foot of junior midfielder Lisa Abramski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), who finished a touch pass from senior midfielder Kimber Kisselback (Langhorne, Pa.) at 41:48, 1-0. Abramski's bouncing shot clipped the right post and settled in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Holy Family University expanded its lead at 49:28, when Kisselback was played in on a feed from freshman forward Shannon Metzler (Erial, N.J.), took aim from the edge of the box and beat Chestnut Hill College goalie, senior
Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.), 2-0.
The Griffins took advantage of a fortuitous bounce midway through the second half, when Ruth gathered a loose ball in the center of the box and sent a one-timer past Smith for the first goal of her career, 2-1 (61:49). Ruth took aim again a few minutes later, 63:08, but her attempt sailed just wide of net.
The Tigers regained some separation with 9:51 remaining, when sophomore forward Ursula Coyle (Philadelphia, Pa.) found herself wide open in the box on a centering pass from Abramski. Coyle delivered with her second goal of the season, 3-1, sealing Holy Family University's sixth victory in seven games.
Kisselback recorded a game-high nine shots for Holy Family University, which posted a 31-10 advantage in that category. Abramski and senior forward MaryKate Morris (Philadelphia, Pa.) took five apiece.
Battaglia's four early shots were enough to lead the Griffin offense, which also received two attempts from Ruth and one each from junior midfielder
Victoria Fedora (East McKeesport, Pa.), senior midfielder
Victoria Fioretti (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.), junior midfielder
Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.), and senior midfielder
Kelly McKenna (Dover, Del.).
Pauls played the second half and made nine saves in relief of junior
Kayla Reno (Catonsville, Md.), who stopped three shots and took the loss in goal (1-2). Smith recorded two saves to improve to 4-2.
The women's soccer team hits the road for a CACC contest at Nyack College on Saturday, October 18. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
