Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/22/2014) – With plenty at stake during this afternoon's rain-soaked contest at Victory Field #1, the Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College on the strength of second-half strikes by junior
Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) (45:50, 1-1) and freshman
Diogo Barboza (Estoril, Portugal) (69:23, 2-1). In one fell swoop, the streaking Griffins established a new program record with their fourth straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) triumph, took over sole possession of first place in the league standings, and officially clinched a return trip to the CACC playoffs.
Goldey-Beacom College (7-8, 5-4) was the aggressor early on, recording a 6-1 shot advantage in the first half; the only opportunity for Chestnut Hill College (8-6-1, 7-2-1) in the opening period was a blast from junior captain
Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) that stung the palms of Lightning goalkeeper Marcus Arrvidsson (Taby, Sweden). The visitors broke through in the 36
th minute, when freshman forward Omar Hernandez (West Grove, Pa.) rocketed a 35-yard shot over the head of Chestnut Hill College goalie
James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) and into the upper right corner of the net, 1-0 (35:17).
The Griffins came out of intermission reinvigorated, and their early attacking paid dividends less than a minute after the break. Amaya took a pass from senior midfielder
Michael Hester (Seaford, N.Y.) in the box and sent a left-footed shot into the back of the net for his team-leading ninth goal of the season, 1-1 (45:50).
The game remained on level terms until the 65
th minute, when Griffins junior forward
Channing Couillard (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) latched onto a cross and directed a header on net. A leaping Arrvidsson got just enough of the ball to palm it onto the top of the crossbar and out for a corner.
The Griffins' persistence eventually led to the game-winning goal just a few minutes later, when Amaya took aim on a free kick just outside the box. His low shot was parried away by Arrvidsson, but Barboza was right there to deposit the rebound for his second goal of the year, 2-1 (69:23), both of which have come in game-winning fashion. The freshman netted the decisive marker in a 2-1 win at Wilmington University on Wednesday, September 24.
Goldey-Beacom College pushed forward looking for an equalizer, but the Griffin defense was impenetrable, holding the Lightning without a shot over the final 39:46. Jackson finished with seven saves to earn the win (8-5-1). Arrvidsson recorded eight stops in defeat (6-7).
Hernandez joined freshman forward Fernando Sanchez (Madrid, Spain) and freshman midfielder Billy Swontek (Lewes, Del.) in leading the Lightning attack with two shots.
Chestnut Hill College earned a 13-9 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 discrepancy in the second half. Couillard paced the Griffins with six attempts, while Amaya recorded three and Barboza two. The other shots came from Jaffe and sophomore defenseman
Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany).
The Griffins currently lead second-place Concordia College (NY) by two points in the CACC standings with two league games remaining. Philadelphia University and Dominican College (NY) sit three points back with a game in hand.
Chestnut Hill College returns to Victory Field #1 for its CACC home finale on Saturday, October 25, against Bloomfield College. First kick is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
