Wildcats Battle Back to Halt Griffins Win Streak

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/28/2014) – Chestnut Hill College got off to a fast start in tonight's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) matchup with Wilmington University (Del.). But, after dropping the first set, 20-25, the South Division-leading Wildcats responded by taking the next three in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-21) victory. Junior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) led the way with a match-high 23.0 points, but the Griffins saw their three-match winning streak come to an end as Wilmington University completed the season sweep.
 
Chestnut Hill College (13-13, 8-7) got a quick jump on Wilmington University (16-12, 12-3), leading by as many as four points, 10-6, in the opening set before the Wildcats clawed back to take a 19-17 lead, their last in a set that featured 10 ties and five lead changes. From there, the Griffins went on a run, winning seven straight points – the last six on the serve of freshman outside hitter Peyton Reno (Wilmington, DE) – to gain a set point at 24-19. Wilmington University stopped the bleeding briefly, but sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) gave the Griffins a leg up with her seventh kill of the set, 25-20.
 
Wilmington University returned the favor, taking the second set by the same 25-20 margin, 1-1. The Wildcats carried that momentum over to the third set, storming out to a 15-5 lead and cruising to a 25-14 win, 2-1.
 
The fourth set was tightly contested, as neither team led by more than three until the final point of the match. Chestnut Hill College continued to erase small deficits and eventually took the lead on a four-point run that made it 18-7 Griffins. The Wildcats responded with the next three points, 20-18, before Chestnut Hill College pulled even again at 20-20 on a kill by freshman middle hitter Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Unfortunately, the Wildcats reeled off four points in a row and, after the Griffins staved off one match point, clinched victory on a ball handling error by Chestnut Hill College, 25-21 (3-1).
 
Sophomore outside hitter Allison Briley (Monroeville, Pa.) finished with a team-high 15 kills for the Wildcats, with junior counterpart Kaitlin DiGiacinto adding 13 to go along with 14 digs. Senior setter Kasey Couch (Woodbine, Md.) also logged a double-double (21 assists, 15 digs), while freshmen middle hitters Eile Harris (Tabernacle, N.J.) and Erin Bistany (Greenbelt, Md.) each had six blocks. Wilmington University finished with 12 team blocks to none for Chestnut Hill College.

Biro paced the Griffins with 23 kills, and McBride collected a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.) facilitated the Chestnut Hill College attack with a season-high 49 assists, and sophomore libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.), the reigning CACC Defensive Player of the Week who entered tonight's game tied for ninth in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II in digs per set, captained the defense with 30 digs.   
 
Senior right side hitter Kaitlyn Schock (Allentown, Pa.) recorded nine kills to match Shunk, and Reno gathered 17 digs.
 
The Griffins are back in action on Friday, October 31, when they begin a three-match road swing with a 5:00 p.m. match at Georgian Court University.
