11/4/2014 4:46:00 PM

Box Score Caldwell, N.J. – (11/4/2014) – In a reversal of roles for #5 Chestnut Hill College, the Griffins took a majority of the shots in today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Opening Round contest at #4 Caldwell University, 19-9. Unfortunately, as tension rose around the 19-minute mark it was the Cougars who emerged with a 1-0 advantage on a throw-in connection between freshman defenseman Patrick Grey (Auckland, New Zealand) and freshman forward Sam Odell (Walton-On-Thames, England). The narrow lead lasted the remaining 70:37, sending the Cougars to the CACC Semifinals on a 1-0 victory.

Play was even early as both Chestnut Hill College (8-10-1) and Caldwell University (13-5) exchanged a series of assaults before the Cougars snared the advantage on Odell's third goal of the season. The Cougars first couple shots sailed wide of sophomore goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) and the after a corner kick at 10:36, freshman midfielder Joseph Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.) fired the Griffins first shot over the Cougar goal. A couple minutes later, a strike from junior forward Channing Couillard (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) found the awaiting hands of junior goalkeeper Michael Hartmann (Medford, N.J.) at 12:26. After another unsuccessful Griffin corner kick the Cougars made the most of their next opportunity with Grey using the emotion of a yellow card (19:05) to inspire his teammates for the contest's only goal. He found Odell for the game-winner at 19:23, sending his classmate on a break off a well-placed throw-in, 1-0. Following the tally the Griffins looked for immediate revenge as senior midfielder Georges Beyiha (Yaoundé, Cameroon) headed a third corner right of Hartmann and the Cougar goal. The Griffins continued to pressure the Cougar defense before and after intermission, outshooting their opponent for only the fifth time this season. Unfortunately, Hartman and the Cougar defense were up for the challenge as the All-CACC First Team goalkeeper saved the only eight shots he needed to in order to keep the Griffins off the scoreboard.

Odell, junior midfielder Christian Castro (Clifton, N.J.), and senior midfielder Cole Downs (Bricktown, N.J.) offered two shots apiece while three other Cougars issued a shot. Hartmann improved to 13-5 with his fourth shutout of the season.

Couillard recorded five shots, junior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) took four, while sophomore defenseman Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany), junior midfielder Matthew Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.), and his brother, Joseph, took two apiece. Still, four others registered a shot each, yet no Griffins found goal in team's second-highest shot total of the season. Jackson made three saves in the loss (8-8-1).

The men's soccer team finishes the 2014 season, their first under Head Coach Casey Huckel, at 8-10-1 overall and 7-4-1 in regular season conference play.
