Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (9/16/2014) – The Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team started tonight's non-conference contest against Bloomsburg University on the right foot with an early strike from senior forward
Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia), but that was as good as it got for the Griffins as the visitors responded with five unanswered goals and pulled away for a 5-1 victory. Five different players found the back of the net for Bloomsburg University, which picked up its first win of the season.
Just three days after a stirring 3-0 shutout of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival, #25 Post University, Chestnut Hill College (1-3-1) looked to have carried that momentum over to Tuesday's game, grabbing a 1-0 advantage at the 4:57 mark when Amaya blasted a left-footed shot to the top left corner after being sprung free on a breakaway by a beautiful long pass from senior midfielder
Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Undeterred, Bloomsburg University (1-1-1), which had been shut out in each of its first two contests, found its footing late in the first half, netting the equalizer at 29:16 when freshman Austin Transue (Langhorne, Pa.) latched on to a bouncing ball in the box and rifled it past Griffins goalie, senior
Travis Powers (Hewitt, N.J.). After that, the Huskies used a pair of quick-strike scoring spurts spanning halftime to put the game away.
The first came just before intermission, when freshman midfielder Brett Milden (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and junior midfielder Matt Zima (Newtown, Pa.) scored less than two minutes apart to give Bloomsburg University a 3-1 advantage heading into the break. Milden provided the go-ahead strike at 42:05, 2-1, and Zima added to the lead with a booming free kick that deflected off the Griffins wall and into the back of the net at 43:48, 3-1.
The Huskies used their quick-strike offense to perfection again shortly after halftime, scoring two goals in less than two minutes for the second time. Junior midfielder James Kiama (Shippensburg, Pa.) found the back of the net on a breakaway after a Chestnut Hill College turnover, 4-1 (55:20), and sophomore midfielder Josh Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) provided the final margin, 5-1 (57:06), by heading in a perfect corner kick from freshman forward Hamilton Rodkey (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who had two assists on the night.
Amaya established a new career high with his third goal of the season, while Jaffe added his second assist of the year for the Griffins. Powers made five saves in his first start of 2014, including a do-or-die block of a Huskies player who had gotten in all alone on net early in the game (4:34). Classmate
Frederick Kissinger III (Cinnaminson, N.J.) played just over 13 minutes in relief and stopped three shots in his first action of the season. In addition to Amaya (2 shots) and Jaffe (1), sophomore defenseman
Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany), freshman defenseman
Joseph McGuigan (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior forward
Channing Couillard (Atlantic Beach, Fla.), freshman forward
Diogo Barboza (Estoril, Portugal), and freshman midfielder
Joseph Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.) each recorded a shot for Chestnut Hill College.
The Griffins return to CACC play on Saturday, September 20, when they conclude a three-game homestand with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Felician College.
