Panthers Pause Griffins Winning Ways

Box Score Garden City, N.Y. – (9/26/2014) – The Griffins five-game win streak came to a halt this evening as Chestnut Hill College fell at Adelphi University by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-12) final. Sophomore outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) headlined a balanced, but overmatched Griffin effort as the Panthers used a .232 (36K-19E-45TA) hitting percentage, ten aces, and six team blocks to earn the win.
 
Adelphi University (3-9) gradually pulled away for a 24-12 lead before having to hold off a six-point Chestnut Hill College (8-7) rally in a 25-18 opening-set victory. The Panthers commanded the early play in the second set, establishing an 11-2 advantage before the Griffin defense evened the score at 20-20. Unfortunately, the home team earned the next three points before taking the set by a 25-23 measure. The third set went swiftly with the Panthers controlling play early, 10-2, and late with a seven-point closing run, 25-12.
 
The Panthers spread the ball around with three players finishing the affair with eight kills. Junior setter Alayna Jackson (McKinney, Texas) was the engine, five aces and 25 assists, while double-digit digs from sophomore libero Sierra Cook (Spokane, Wash.), 14, and senior outside hitter Haley Blunt (East Setauket, N.Y.), 13, and six team blocks anchored the defense.
 
McBride was the Griffins top front-line performer with seven kills, two aces, and six digs. She got some help from junior outside hitter Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.), six kills, and freshman middle hitter Melissa Shunk (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), five kills, who also benefitted from the play of junior setter Alyssa Tamsing (Ventura, Calif.), 16 assists. Defensively, sophomore libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) led the Griffins with 13 digs.
 
The women's volleyball team returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play tomorrow, Saturday, September 27, when the Griffins visit Post University for a 12:00 p.m. match.
