Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/13/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team locked horns with first-place Philadelphia University this evening, hunting a signature victory in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) race. Unfortunately, the Lady Rams battered their way to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-20) sweep inside Sorgenti Arena, solidifying their grip atop the South Division and avenging a pair of losses at the hands of the Griffins a year ago. The victory stretched Philadelphia University's winning streak to 10.
Philadelphia University (12-4, 8-1) came in winners of nine straight matches, and the Lady Rams had not dropped a set in their last six contests. Chestnut Hill College (6-15, 5-3) was unable to snap either streak in its first action since clawing out of a two-set hole to defeat Georgian Court University for the first time in program history.
The Griffins had never knocked off the Lady Rams until last year, and the visitors made sure it didn't happen a third time, hitting .325 (48K-11E-114TA) on the night behind a balanced offensive attack. Five players recorded at least six kills, led by 11 from freshman outside hitter Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa.), who added 16 digs for a double-double. The rookie posted six of those kills in the first set, helping Philadelphia University storm out to a 15-5 lead en route to a 25-15 opening verdict.
The Lady Rams trailed briefly, 3-2, in the second set before reeling off the next three points and never fell behind again. The Griffins got as close as 19-16 in the second and 15-14 in the third, but Philadelphia University always had an answer and kept them chasing on the way to matching 25-20 decisions.
Senior middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y.) chipped in nine kills and freshman middle hitter Daniela Cintron (Guaynabo, P.R.) supplied seven for the Lady Rams, who got six kills apiece from senior outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill.) and sophomore middle hitter Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa.). Manley finished with 13 digs, and freshman setter Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md.) played the role of facilitator with 21 assists and eight digs.
Senior outside hitter
Rachel Biro (Nazareth, Pa.) paced Chestnut Hill College with eight kills. Freshman setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) posted 18 assists and junior outside hitter
Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded five kills and a team-high nine digs.
The women's volleyball team takes the short trip to Holy Family University for a 7:00 p.m. CACC contest on Thursday, October 15.
