Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (10/3/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team went from deflation to elation in less than 90 seconds at the end of this afternoon's rain-soaked clash with visiting Dominican College (NY). The Griffins conceded the tying goal with just 3:22 to play, then claimed a stunning victory when a cross by sophomore forward
Diogo Barboza (Estoril, Portugal) was headed in by a Charger defender at the near post with only 1:57 remaining, handing the home side a wild 2-1 triumph in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. Barboza had a foot in both Griffin tallies, scoring his first goal of the season at the 69:27 mark.
Dominican College (1-8, 1-4) enjoyed the run of play for a majority of the afternoon, outshooting Chestnut Hill College (4-4-2, 3-2-2) by an 8-2 margin in the first half, but it was the Scarlet and Gold that struck first as Barboza rose high to head in a picture-perfect cross from freshman midfielder
Jeffrey Ast (Reading, Pa.) at the far post for a 1-0 edge (69:27).
For most of the next 20 minutes, it looked as if Barboza – who notched two game-winners a year ago – would have the last word, but the Chargers shocked the hosts with an equalizer at 86:38. Senior midfielder Lukas Nordin (Lidkoping, Sweden) latched onto a free kick by sophomore midfielder Daniel Alvarado (Santa Barbara, Costa Rica) from just outside the box on the right side and directed a header to the lower left corner to momentarily steal three points from Chestnut Hill College's account.
With the specter of overtime looming on a dreary day filled with strong winds and a steady drizzle, Barboza and the Griffins got their big break at the 88:03 mark, when Barboza looked to pick out senior midfielder
Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a long cross from the right flank. Before the ball reached its intended target, a Dominican College player re-directed the service into the back of his own net, putting Chestnut Hill College on the winning end of a surprising sequence.
Sophomore defender Hallvard Kuloey (Bergen, Norway) recorded a game-high four shots for the Chargers, and junior goalkeeper Steven Hegner (Pomona, N.Y.) made three saves before becoming an unlucky loser (1-8).
Jaffe, Barboza, senior midfielder
Matthew Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.), and sophomore defender
Joseph McGuigan (Philadelphia, Pa.) each recorded two shots for the Griffins, who were outshot by a 14-11 count for the day. Junior goaltender
James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) collected five saves to improve to 4-3-2 on the season.
With the victory, Chestnut Hill College avenged a 1-0 loss to the Chargers a year ago and stopped a three-game winless streak. The Griffins are off for a week before traveling to Bloomfield College, the 10
th-ranked team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region poll, for a 1:30 p.m. CACC contest on Saturday, October 10.
