Box Score Waterbury, Conn. - (11/5/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team's magical ride continues. Senior midfielder
Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) converted a penalty kick – his second goal of the game – 5:24 into overtime to send the #4 Griffins to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championship with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Wilmington University. Three days after eliminating defending league champion Philadelphia University in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, Chestnut Hill College made use of the penalty spot to score the stunning upset and book their first-ever trip to the title game. The Griffins will meet sixth-seeded Bloomfield College, a 1-0 overtime winner over second-seeded and host Post University, in Saturday's final.
CACC MEN'S SOOCER CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT BRACKET After regulation ended in a 1-1 deadlock, Chestnut Hill College (8-6-3) faced the specter of a golden-goal overtime for a second straight match. Wilmington University (14-5), ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II East Region, fired away first, but junior goalkeeper
James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) corralled a shot by junior defender Geoff Velasquez (New Castle, Del.) at 91:53.
A few minutes later, junior defender
Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany) attempted to split a double-team and was brought down in the box, giving Chestnut Hill College a chance at a walk-off win. Up stepped Jaffé, and the senior star made no doubt, directing his 13
th goal of the season into the top left corner of the net to add another chapter to the program's already-historic campaign.
The two sides traded forays into the other's defensive zone for much of the first quarter of the contest. Chestnut Hill College junior midfielder
Matthew McLeod (Sewell, N.J.) recorded the game's first shot on goal at the 13:34 mark, and Jackson was called to action for the first time at 21:45, when he parried a blast by Wilmington University senior midfielder Kristofer Michael (Toronto, Ontario).
Unfortunately, that served as a prelude to an early deficit, as senior forward Josh Fawssett (Sussex, England) scored off a cross from counterpart Lance Berry (Bear, Del.) – an All-CACC First Team selection – to help the Wildcats draw first blood, 1-0, at 22:46. Wilmington University put two more shots on frame in the opening half, but Jackson made the stop each time to keep the Griffins close.
Chestnut Hill College, which suffered a 6-1 rout in the first meeting between the teams, wasted little time after intermission in serving notice that the Wildcats were in for a fight this time around. Jaffé put his remarkable individual skill on display once more, beating a defender and scoring in traffic from just inside the box to register his 12
th goal of the season and bring about a 1-1 tie at the 51:23 mark.
A spot in the conference championship at stake, both teams pushed hard for a go-ahead goal. The Wildcats forced Jackson to make a trio of stops before a header by sophomore defender
Lindsay Murdoch (Perth, Scotland) necessitated a save by Hall just shy of the 70-minute mark (69:55). Jackson stoned another Wildcats offering at 81:52, and neither side could put anything on frame in the final eight-plus minutes of regulation, sending the Griffins into their second overtime affair in four days. Shortly thereafter, Jaffé delivered.
Berry (seven shots) and newly-minted CACC Player of the Year junior midfielder Clifford Nwechefom (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) (six) led the Wilmington University attack, and Hall (14-5) finished with two saves.
Jaffé again orchestrated Chestnut Hill College's offense with four shots, with Fussen adding two. The Griffins were outshot, 23-10, for the afternoon, and the Wildcats logged a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Jackson (8-5-3), however, made sure it didn't matter with eight more saves.
With his two tallies, Jaffé became just the second player in program history to reach 13 goals in a single season, joining Andrew Thorne '07, who deposited a program-record 21 during the 2007 campaign.
A pair of extra-time nail-biters behind them, the men's soccer team now sets its sights on the Bears and a grand piece of history - a victory would make them the first Chestnut Hill College athletic program to capture a CACC championship. The Griffins' quest begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, at Post University's LaMoy Field.
