Washington, D.C. – (3/29/2015) – For the second time this weekend the Chestnut Hill College tennis teams traveled together, this time taking the courts at the University of the District of Columbia for a dual match against the Firebirds. The women captured their 11th win of the season with their 8-1 triumph over the hosts, meanwhile the men were defeated in a battle of regionally ranked squads, 5-4.
The Chestnut Hill College (11-7) women got a head start on the University of the District of Columbia (UDC, 7-8), collecting a default point at number three doubles before sophomore
Laure-Anne Josso (Vannes, France) and senior
Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) earned the Griffins a point in the top team flight with an 8-2 victory. The Firebirds broke cut the advantage in half with a 9-7 win at number two doubles, but that would be the only point they could muster as the Griffins overpowered the home side in all six singles flights; 2-1. As in doubles, the bottom flight point came by default, the rest came in order with Josso taking the top individual match 6-3, 6-1, before Dawson triumphed 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles, freshman
Lara Scholtze (Bod Homburg, Germany) captured number three singles 6-2, 6-1, junior
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) secured number four singles 8-4, and senior
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) got one step closer to the program's all-time win mark with her 8-1 win at number five singles; 8-1.
The Chestnut Hill College (6-6) men hoped to follow in the women's footsteps with bookend doubles wins at number three (8-3) and number one singles (9-8) earned Griffins a 2-1 advantage heading to individual play. The Firebirds won the middle team flight 8-6. Seniors,
Steven Say (Cannes, France) and
Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) made up for the doubles loss with singles wins. Unfortunately, they were the only two Griffins to win their individual match, leaving the Firebirds to a 5-4 comeback victory. Say first extended the Griffin advantage to 3-1 with his 7-6, 6-3 win at number three singles. But after Firebird wins at number two (7-5, 6-4) and number one (6-4, 4-6, 6-1) singles, Humes returned the Griffins to the lead, 4-3, with his 6-3, 6-0 triumph at number six singles. Sadly, the lead was short-lived as the Firebirds stole the match with closing wins at number four (6-4, 6-3) and number five (6-3, 6-3) singles; 5-4.
The Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team takes a break until they face Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) on Friday, April 3, while the men return to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Tuesday, March 31 with a 3:00 p.m. match at Bloomfield College.
