Bloomsburg, Pa. - (4/10/2015) – Playing a rare match under the lights, the Chestnut Hill College tennis teams opened the Bloomsburg University Duals against the host Huskies. Both Griffin outfits looked the part of nationally ranked units, as the #34 women dropped a total of 12 games during a 9-0 rout, while the #49 men faced a stiffer challenge that nevertheless ended with the same result. With the dual shutouts, the Chestnut Hill College prides extended their winning streaks to four and six matches, respectively.
The Chestnut Hill College women (14-7) made short work of Bloomsburg University (2-6), starting with three 8-0 doubles triumphs in quick succession. Sophomore
Laure-Anne Josso (Vannes, France) and senior
Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) were the victorious parties in the first flight, and they were backed up by freshman
Lara Scholtze (Bod Homburg, Germany) and junior
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) at number two and junior
Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) and senior
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) at number three.
Williams-Mulesa and Oechsle expanded upon their doubles success as individuals, securing matching 8-0 victories at third and fourth singles, respectively. Josso (first singles) and Scholtze (second) registered 8-1 verdicts, while Owens toughed out an 8-6 result at fifth singles and junior
Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) was an 8-4 winner out of the sixth flight to deliver the final blow, 9-0.
The Bloomsburg University men (2-7) were far more competitive, pushing Chestnut Hill College (12-6) to a pair of tiebreakers in singles play before bowing out. Seniors
Michael Humes (Mount Laurel, N.J.) at second singles and
Devin Hampton (Midland, Texas) at fifth singles recorded identical 9-8 (3) scores for the Griffins, who also got hard-earned 8-6 victories from sophomore
Pedro Oranges de Figueredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior
Sammy Atri (Mexico City, Mexico) from the third and sixth courts. Senior
Steven Say (Cannes, France) had the easiest time of it, 8-2, on the top court, and freshman
Pedro Festugato Regalin (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) earned an 8-4 win at number four.
Humes and Say teamed for an 8-2 count at second doubles, while Boyle joined forces with freshman
Jonathan Ducretot (Antibes, France) in the third flight, 8-3. Regalin and fellow rookie
Lucas Bocaletto (Itatiba, Brazil) proved a potent mix at number one, leaving with an 8-4 victory.
Both Griffin units continue their Bloomsburg Duals slates tomorrow, April 11; the men have an 8:00 a.m. wake-up call against Shepherd University, and the women will meet University of Charleston at 10:15 a.m.
