Jaffé, Jackson Star as Griffins Duel Lions to Thrilling CACC Draw

9/22/2015 9:19:00 PM

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. - (9/22/2015) – For the third straight season, Chestnut Hill College and Georgian Court University needed two overtimes to decide matters, the two sides locking horns in an evenly matched fray at Victory Field #1 this evening. Fittingly, Griffin senior midfielder Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Lions freshman midfielder Arturo Sanchez (Kearny, N.J.) each scored twice for their respective sides, with Sanchez's 80th-minute (79:41) equalizer serving as the final word in a 2-2 draw. Heroic efforts abounded over the next 30 minutes, however, leaving the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foes to settle for a well-deserved point. The stalemate extended Chestnut Hill College's unbeaten streak to five games.

Georgian Court University (2-2-2, 1-0-2) recorded seven of the game's first eight shots, but it was Chestnut Hill College (3-2-2, 2-0-2) that broke through. Jaffé drew first blood with a scintillating strike, settling a rebound off a shot by senior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) and using his back heel to guide the ball past Lions junior goalkeeper Aleksandar Miolsevic (Belgrade, Serbia), 1-0 (38:11).

The euphoria was short-lived, with Sanchez needing just 1:17 after intermission to level the playing field with a well-timed volley off a cross from junior midfielder Garrett McVeigh (Cherry Hill, N.J.), 1-1 (46:17). Jaffé answered back with his second marker of the night, weaving his way into the box after a being played in by a long ball from junior defender Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany) and beating Milosevic with a shot to the lower left corner, 2-1 (63:43). Not to be outdone, Sanchez made it 2-apiece with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, slotting home his own rebound to send the sides into extra time.

Both goaltenders made highlight-reel saves in the overtime periods, with Milosevic doing the honors at the end of the first and Griffin junior James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) playing the role of brick wall in the second. Chestnut Hill College appeared destined for a golden goal in the final half-minute of the first overtime, but Milosevic stoned Jaffé's low shot and dove to keep a rebound attempt by sophomore defender Joseph McGuigan (Philadelphia, Pa.) out of the net.

The Lions seemed to have snatched a victory late in the second extra session, only to be stymied by Jackson's remarkable sequence of saves. He staved off a breakaway by junior forward Michael Clarke (Essex, UK) (108:18), then rejected junior midfielder Elliot Baldwin (Oxford, UK) twice on the doorstep, the second time a reflexive save off a rebound (108:42), to preserve the Griffins' chances.

Clarke fired eight of the Lions' 24 shots on the night, and Sanchez scored his two goals on just three attempts. Milosevic (2-2-2) finished with 11 saves.

Jaffé notched a nine-shot effort in recording the second multi-goal game of his career, while Amaya served up six shots and earned his third assist of the season on Jaffé's initial tally. Fussen's assist was the first of his career. Jackson (3-2-2) matched Milosevic with five saves in the overtime periods to finish with nine for the contest, all after halftime.

Last year's contest ended in a 1-1 deadlock, and Georgian Court University captured a 2-1, double-overtime triumph in the 2013 edition of the brief but ultra-competitive series.

Chestnut Hill College seeks to preserve its unbeaten streak with a road trip to Felician College, where the scarlet and gold will meet the Golden Falcons for an 8:00 p.m. showdown on Saturday, September 26.
