Box Score Lyndhurst, N.J. - (9/26/2015) – Senior midfielder
Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) delivered the Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team a lead early in the second half, depositing the rebound of his own saved penalty kick to snap a scoreless stalemate in the 51
st minute (50:05). Under the lights of its home turf, however, host Felician College equalized in just 1:15, put in the eventual game-winner nearly 10 minutes after that (61:13), and held on from there to grab a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) conquest. The setback was the Griffins' first in league play and stopped their unbeaten streak, the team's longest since 2010, at five games.
The first half was a muddled midfield affair, but Chestnut Hill College (3-3-2, 2-1-2) seemed to come alive late, with four of its six shots occurring in the final 6:34 of the frame. The surge carried over after the halftime break, culminating in a penalty kick opportunity when Felician College (2-6, 1-3) was whistled for a foul in the box. Jaffé stepped up to the spot, but his effort was rejected by sophomore goalkeeper John Burns (Saddle Brook, N.J.). The Golden Falcon netminder conceded a rebound, though, and the Griffins' senior star cashed in on his second opportunity, his team-leading sixth goal of the 2015 campaign putting the scarlet and gold in the driver's seat, 1-0 (50:05).
The high was short-lived. Felician College graduate midfielder Rafa Coronel (Mexico City, Mexico) headed in a throw-in from junior defender Connor Stephens (Blairstown, N.J.), evening the score at 1 at the 51:20 mark. The home side received a blow to its chances, however, when a player was sent off for a red card, giving the Griffins a man advantage from 53:44 on.
With its newfound position of strength, Chestnut Hill College continued to push forward, forcing Burns into a pair of saves and directing another salvo just wide, but the Golden Falcons turned the Griffins' aggression against them. They quickly transformed a counter-attack into a breakaway that ended with freshman midfielder Jorge Pelayo (Clifton, N.J.) sneaking a shot past junior keeper
Miguel Gonzalez-Escobar (Denver, Colo.) for a 2-1 lead (61:13). That go-ahead strike held up as Burns stonewalled four Griffin offerings to help Felician College post its first CACC victory.
Burns (2-6) stood tall between the pipes, collecting nine saves to support the efforts of Coronel (four shots), freshman midfielder Kenny Monfort (Spring Valley, N.Y.) (three shots, assist), and Pelayo (two shots).
Jaffé led all players with seven shots for Chestnut Hill College, which outshot the Golden Falcons by a 16-11 count. His second-half goal marked the third straight game in which he has found the back of the net, and his fourth straight contest with a point. Freshman midfielder
Jeffrey Ast (Reading, Pa.) directed both of his efforts on goal, while fellow rookie
Jason Burns (Douglassville, Pa.) and junior midfielder
Matthew McLeod (Sewell, N.J.) matched him with two shots each. Gonzalez-Escobar (0-1) recorded three saves in his first start as a Griffin.
The Griffins return home for a big test on Wednesday, September 30. They host first-place Wilmington University (6-1, 4-0), ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) Division II East Region poll, at 7:00 p.m.
