Griffins Continue Rough Early-Season Schedule With Road Contest at #7 SNHU

Box Score Manchester, N.H. - (9/6/2015) – Continuing a challenging early-season schedule, Chestnut Hill College hung with #7 Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) for nearly 70 minutes of this evening's contest. The Pennmen scored the contest's first goal on a penalty kick at 21:28 before a 31-5 shooting advantage overwhelmed the Griffins in the 69th minute (68:38), when a header to the goal provided a 2-0 cushion that later increases to a three-goal edge on a headed corner kick less than four minutes later (72:18). Senior midfielder Nicholas Jaffé (Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded two of the Griffins' five shots.

Chestnut Hill College (0-2) was on the offensive early with Jaffé taking the game's first strike and senior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) setting up a following assault on a corner kick to the head of sophomore forward Diogo Barboza (Estoril, Portugal), Unfortunately, neither attempt were successful. The Pennmen managed to reverse the field and force the Griffins into a bad foul at 21:28, the result was a converted penalty kick that awarded the home team a 1-0 advantage. 

The game took a different tone in the second half as the Pennmen nine unanswered shots and 12 of the second half's first 13 shots before increasing their lead to 2-0 at 68:38 on a header from junior defenseman Michael Rowley (Cooperstown, N.Y.). Less than four minutes later they scored again, this time with senior defenseman Dominic Samuel (Toronto, Ontario) converting a corner kick with a header to the back of the Griffin goal at 72:18, 3-0. Chestnut Hill College was unable to get another shot off against the Pennmen defense as senior goalkeeper Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) made the only two saves he needed to in the win (1-0). 

Graduate midfielder Sofiane Tergou (Bitche, France) scored the Pennmen's first goal and set up senior defense Dominic Samuel (Toronto, Ontario) for the second insurance tally. Fellow senior defenseman Jonathan Lupinelli (Mont de Marsan, France) provided the assist on Rowley's score.

Mendes was responsible for the other Griffins shot as Amaya and Barboza took one apiece in access of Jaffé's pair of strikes. Junior goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) made eight saves in the loss (0-2). 

The men's soccer team returns home after the Labor Day holiday to host the University of the District of Columbia in a 4:00 p.m. home opener on Wednesday, September 9.
