Chestnut Hill College Suffers 53-7 CSFL Loss At the University of Pennsylvania

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/21/2016) - Chestnut Hill College traveled down the 76 to historic Franklin Field for tonight's Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) engagement with the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). There, the Quakers welcomed the Griffins with stout defense as a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown from sophomore Raevon Floyd-Bennett (Union City, N.J.) accounted for the only Scarlet and Gold score in a 53-7 final. Floyd-Bennett led the Griffins in all-purpose yardage with a 131 of his yard coming on special teams. Sophomore nose guard Brian Layden (Springfield, Pa.) captained the Chestnut Hill College defense with nine tackles (6 solo, 3 assisted) and a sack.

UPenn (5-0) scored on their first two possession to post an early 14-0 (8:58, 1st quarter) advantage over Chestnut Hill College (2-3). Unfortunately, the Griffins were not able to make headway until late in the opening frame as a nine-yard rush by freshman quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) and a Quaker defensive holding call achieved them a pair of first downs early in the second quarter. Still, it would not be until the following Scarlet and Gold possession that the Griffins would play on the UPenn side of the grid iron. In fact, the Quaker lead reached 27-0 (6:42, 2nd Quarter) before Chestnut Hill College appeared on the scoreboard with Floyd-Bennett's 53-yard punt return. It was the first touchdown of the year for the 2015 team Most Valuable Player (MVP), who had only played defense until tonight's special teams appearance.

The field cleared for halftime with the home side controlling a 27-7 advantage. Regrettably, Chestnut Hill College continued their offensive struggles in the second half, where UPenn advanced their lead to 37-7 by the end of the third quarter and 53-7 by game's end.

UPenn totaled 178 rushing yards to the Griffins' 49. Meanwhile, senior quarterback Mike McCurdy (Bethesda, Md.) 16-of-30 passes for 298 yards and five touchdowns. Junior linebacker Quinn Karam (Clarks Summit, Pa.) and senior defensive end Patrick Boyle (West Windsor, N.J.) headline the Quaker defense; the former totaling a team-high seven tackles (4 solo, 3 assisted) while the latter made six solo tackles, including three sacks for a net loss of 17 yards.

Freshman running back Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the Griffins' leading rusher with 18 yards on 14 carries (1.3 yards/carry) while Marino was 9-of-26 (34.6%) for 72 yards. Freshman wide receiver Lewis Roman (Randallstown, Md.) caught three of those passes for 30 yards while Floyd-Bennet helped Layden on the defensive end with six solo tackles in the Scarlet and Gold secondary.

The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team continues their CSFL schedule on Saturday, October 29, when they visit Franklin Pierce University for a 12:00 p.m.  kickoff.
