Chestnut Hill College Grinds Out 14-12 “CACC Bowl” Victory Over Post University

10/8/2016 10:35:00 PM

Box Score Waterbury, Conn. - (10/8/2016) – Post University opened tonight's Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) contest – billed as Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Bowl II - with a 66-yard pass to the Chestnut Hill College three-yard line. Two plays later they scored the game's first points, but it was the Scarlet and Gold who would hold the trophy high at the end of the night. Freshman running back Jonathan Barber (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore wide receiver Reginald Robinson Jr. (Germantown, Md.) scored on back-to-back third-quarter possessions, before the defense came up big on a late fourth-quarter point after attempt that held at Eagles at bay in a 14-12 final.

Chestnut Hill College (2-1) started moving the chains on their second possession, but the effort did not pay off until the second half. A good Barber return on the third-quarter kickoff started the Griffins' first drive at their own 43-yard line. A pair of completions from freshman quarterback Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) provided the Scarlet and Gold with a first-and-10 at the Post University (0-3) 23-yard line. After pass interference and a 12-yard Barber touchdown run freshman Dante Fuchs (Sinking Springs, Pa.) converted the extra point to give Chestnut Hill College a 7-6 lead (12:10).

Off the ensuing kickoff, the stout Griffin defense pinned the Eagles deep in their own zone. A short punt gave Chestnut Hill College great field position at the Post University 37-yard line. Marino then made an 11-yard connection to senior wide receiver David Dorsey (Philadelphia, Pa.) to gain a first-and-10 at the Eagle 22-yard line. Two runs and a false start later, Marino located Robinson for another Scarlet and Gold touchdown that was again supported by a successful Fuchs kick (14-6 at 7:35). Post University hoped to answer on their next drive, but the Griffin defense denied a 4th-and-11 on their own 18-yard line to fend off the Eagles until later in the affair.

Post University got their opportunity to tie the game late in the fourth quarter (5:24) with a fumble recovery at the Griffin 34-yard. Two completions and a one-yard touchdown run later they stood at the Scarlet and Gold three-yard line, awaiting to attempt the point after (14-12 at 3:41). But freshman quarterback Buddy Enriquez (Sacramento, Calif.) could not find his target amongst the Chestnut Hill College secondary. The Griffins took a couple minutes off the clock with their following possession and sealed the Eagles' fate when Robinson picked off an Enriquez pass with 18 seconds (0:18) to go.

Barber totaled 88 yards on 18 carries (4.9 yards/carry). Marino was 15-of-22 (68.2%) and threw for 160 yards. He completed seven passes to freshman wide receiver Joe Lee (Horsham, Pa.), who gained 52 yards for Chestnut Hill College. Robinson scored on his only reception and added a team-high nine tackles to his game-ending interception.

The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team returns to the grid iron on Friday, October 14, when they visit the United States Naval Academy for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
