Philadelphia University Tops Chestnut Hill College, 3-1, in CACC Contest

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (11/4/2016) – Chestnut Hill College senior outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) registered a team-high 10 kills while also recording 16 digs for her second straight double-double, but it wouldn't be enough as Philadelphia University topped Chestnut Hill College, 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 20-25, 14-25), in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Sorgenti Arena on Friday night.
 
Prior to the contest, McBride, along with fellow seniors: libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.), setter Emily Drew (Ringoes, N.J.), and middle hitter Emily Koehler (Bath, Pa.), were honored in a senior night ceremony.
 
Once the action started Chestnut Hill College (11-14, 9-7 CACC) raced out early on Tabosh's serve, with a kill by Koehler off a Drew assist staking the hosts to a 4-1 advantage. The Griffins would extend their lead on the service of Drew, scoring a trio of points to take a 15-9 lead. Philadelphia University (23-4, 15-1 CACC) would trim the deficit down to three, 15-12, but the Griffins proved to be too strong, clinching the first set with a 25-19 victory.
 
The second set saw the Lady Rams jump out to a 9-4 advantage following an attacking error by the Griffins. The Scarlet and Gold battled back, ripping off five consecutive points, capped by a block from freshman middle hitter Cassie Callahan (Bridgeton, Mo.) and junior right side Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.), to knot the contest at 9-9. Philadelphia University would then go on a run of their own, scoring nine of the next 11 points to take a commanding 18-11 lead. The Lady Rams wouldn't look back, securing the 25-16 victory in the set.
 
The third set was a back-and-forth affair, with a block by Koehler and freshman outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Indianapolis, Ind.) making the score 14-14 at the halfway point. The Lady Rams would go on a mini-run on the service of senior middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa.), upping their lead to five, 19-14. A hitting error by Philadelphia University would trim the Griffins' deficit down to three, 22-19, but the Lady Rams proved too much, taking the 25-20 victory in the set.
 
The fourth set saw the Lady Rams race out to an early lead then coast home, earning a 25-14 victory. Following a back-and-forth battle in the early going, Philadelphia University opened up a five point lead, 15-10, following a service error. A kill by McBride would cut the deficit down to four, but the Lady Rams finished the match on a 10-3 run to secure the 3-1 victory in the match.
 
McBride led the Griffins with 10 kills, 16 digs two service aces. Koehler was second on the team with eight kills, with Drew finishing with 11 assists and five digs. Trabosh rounded out the strong play of the senior class, finishing with two kills, one assist, one ace, and a match-best 21 digs.
 
Philadelphia University was led by senior outside hitter Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa.) who finished with 15 kills and 16 digs. Freshman outside hitter Amber Johnson (Hanover, Pa.) finished the game hitting .500 (14K-1E-26TA) while sophomore setter Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md.) finished with a match-high 45 assists.
 
Chestnut Hill College will continue CACC play on Tuesday, November 8, when they travel to USciences. The match begins 7:00 p.m.
