Box Score West Point, N.Y. – (9/16/2016) – The second season of Chestnut Hill College sprint football kicked off this evening as the Scarlet and Gold traveled to West Point, New York, for a Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) season-opener versus the Black Knights of Army. The defending CSFL Champions controlled much of the contest, defeating the Griffins by a decisive 38-0 final. Freshman running back
Jonathan Barber (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led Chestnut Hill College on offense with 30 yards on 10 carries and 92 kick return yards on six attempts. Defensively, junior defensive end
Josean Perez (Bethlehem, Pa.) headlined the Scarlet and Gold effort with nine (three solo, six assists) tackles.
Freshman quarterback
Michael Marino (Blue Bell, Pa.) connected with freshman wide receiver
Jake Hural (Philadelphia, Pa.) for a first down with a 12-yard pass on the sixth possession of game for Chestnut Hill College (0-1). Unfortunately, by that time Army (1-0) already led 10-0, netting a 36-yard field goal on their first drive (3-0, 12:05) and a touchdown on their second (10-0, 8:26). After Hural's first down, a series of fruitless runs forced the Griffins to punt. The return brought Army to the Scarlet and Gold 18 yard line, where a fumble recovery by freshman
Luke Daub (Easton, Pa.) gave the Griffins the ball back deep in their own end. But, the fresh possession ended with a punt, placing the Black Knights back on the offensive at with 1:49 remaining in the first half. It would take Army only 49 seconds to advance their lead to 17-0 as sophomore quarterback Brady Miller (Glen Rock, N.Y.) completed 4-of-7 passes en route to hitting sophomore Clayton Carter (Indianapolis, Ind.) for a 28-yard touchdown with exactly a minute to remaining in half. After halftime, the Griffins did not fare any better as the Black Knights scored 14 points in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth quarter to claim a 38-0 win.
Fellow freshman running back,
Sef Penson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was second to Barber in total yards for Chestnut Hill College. He rushed for 21 yards on 12 carries and returned a kickoff for 17 yards. Marino finished 5-of-17 (29.4%) for 29 yards.
The Chestnut Hill College sprint football team returns to action on Friday, September 30, when they host Cornell University in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium.
