Griffins Yield to Redhawks in Season Opener

9/3/2016 8:03:00 PM

Box Score Rochester, N.Y. - (9/3/2016) – An early goal from senior defenseman Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany) and a well-played first half from senior goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) put Chestnut Hill College in the cat bird seat headed to the second half of today's season opener at Roberts Wesleyan College. Unfortunately, a tragic two-minute stretch turned the tide as the Redhawks used two connections between junior defenseman Sam Moody (Toronto, Ontario) and senior midfielder Malcolm Shaw (Pickering, Ontario) to tie the affair in the 63rd minute (62:13) and win it in the 64th minute (63:23), 2-1.

Fussen scored the lone Chestnut Hill College (0-1) goal of the game at 3:04, beating the Roberts Wesleyan College (1-1) goalkeeper to the bottom left corner of the net on a 20-yard direct kick, 1-0. The tally made efficient use of the Griffins' five first-half shots, while Jackson made saves on four of the Redhawks' five shots to leave the Scarlet and Gold ahead at halftime. After the break, the home team's aggressive play pushed Chestnut Hill College to their limit, forcing a pair of Griffin cards on either side of the Moody-Shaw connections. The Redhawks' first goal came at 62:13, with Moody crossing the ball from right to left for an oncoming header from Shaw, 1-1. It happened again a little more than a minute later as Shaw deposited the game-winner with a bicycle kick on a Moody restart at 63:23, 2-1. Sadly, the Griffins only managed one shot more shot in the final 26:37, a strike from junior midfielder Charles Simpson (Dalgety Bay, Scotland) that sailed wide of the Roberts Wesleyan College goal at 69:05.

Shaw totaled seven shots in all. His offense helped junior goalkeeper John Clavagila (Pittsford, N.Y.) (1-1) to the win. The Redhawk net-minder made totaled three saves in the process.

Fussen led the Griffins with three shots while Simpson and junior forward Zachary Gray (West Sussex. England) split their other four shots. Jackson (0-1) took the loss despite making six saves.

The Chestnut Hill College men's soccer team will look to even their record on Wednesday, September 7, when they welcome the New York Institute Technology (NYIT) to Victory Field #1 for their 4:00 p.m. home opener.
