Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. - (10/28/2017) – Today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's volleyball match was a battle of the South Division rivals as Chestnut Hill College hosted Holy Family University in league action. The Scarlet and Gold's rallied for a 26-24 opening set victory, but it was the Tigers who walked away with the league win, 3-1 (26-24, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15). Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) produced 16 kills off of a 24-assist effort from junior setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.), while an aggressive senior libero
Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) captained the defense with a season-high 37 digs.
Chestnut Hill College (8-19, 7-8) tightly trailed Holy Family University's (17-8, 12-3) at the start of this evening's intense league bout. The Tigers held a slight advantage until a 22-22 stalemate that broke in the Griffins' favor with on a visitor miscue. A minute later, a Callahan kill broke a 24-24 tie and gave the Griffins enough room for a 26-24 opening-set win, 1-0.
During the second set, Holy Family University took an early 9-5 advantage that caused Chestnut Hill College to play catch up. The Griffins tied the visitors as late as 17-17, unfortunately, the Griffin defense was overpowered by the Tigers in a 25-17 win, 1-1.
In the third set, Chestnut Hill College kept a tight grip on Holy Family University, coming back with a vengeance from a 6-3 deficit to tie the Tigers at 10-10. A little later, sophomore outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) served for three consecutive points that gave the Griffins a 21-20 and forced the Tigers into a timeout. Unfortunately, the visitors took advantage after the break, tying the affair 21-21 and eventually finishing the period with a 25-23, 2-1. Despite their passion, the Griffins' momentum deteriorated, allowing Holy Family University to conclude the contest with a 25-15 win, 3-1.
Junior middle hitter Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa.) led Holy Family University with 17 kills and 29 digs. She followed by sophomore middle hitter Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz.), who totaled 16 kills. Two other Tigers recorded double digits in kills. Junior setter Natalie Stewart (York, Pa.) was a factor as well with a kill, 57 assists, and 11 digs. She got help on the defensive end from sophomore libero Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass.), who made 23 digs.
Callahan added a solo block and a block assist to her eight kills for a team-high 9.5 points, while Kalala supported her eight kills with a pair of digs. Senior captain
Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman middle hitter
Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) were not far behind with six kills each. Sutton added two kills and eight digs to her point play. Reno made three assists in addition to her digs.
The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, October 31, with a 6:00 p.m. match at Jefferson University.
