Women’s Volleyball Visits LIU Post for Non-Conference Tilt

Reily Byxbee
Box Score Brookville, N.Y. - (9/15/2017) – Chestnut Hill College temporarily broke from Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play to visit LIU Post for this evening's women's volleyball match. The Griffins grabbed an early 4-0 edge in the first set versus the Pioneers, but it was all downhill from there as LIU Post knotted the opening set at 6-6 before winning the frame by a 25-23 margin. The home team followed the point with successive wins of 25-16 and 25-21 ended the match after three sets, 3-0. A trio of Griffins led the Scarlet and Gold as senior right side Samantha Gelfan (Chandler Ariz.), and sophomores outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) and sophomore middle hitter Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) totaled seven points apiece.

After leading 4-0, Chestnut Hill College (1-9) reclaimed the lead from LIU Post (7-2) at 8-7 and 9-8, only to gradually fall behind the Pioneers in a 25-23 (1-0) opening set final. The Pioneers paced the Griffins to a 25-16 (2-0) final in the second set thanks to the front court play of junior outside hitter Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio), freshman middle hitter Asiya Way (Denver, Colo.), and senior outside hitter Danielle Valenza (Hauppauge, N.Y.). The trio contributed to a 13-8 closing run and a team .361 (15K-2E-36TA) hitting percentage for the frame. The momentum did not help LIU Post at the start of the third set as the Griffins were successful early. The Scarlet and Gold scored five straight points on the serve of senior libero Peyton Reno (Wilmington, Del.) and led the Pioneers to a late 19-19 tie, before giving way to the home side in an eventual 25-21 end.

Londot recorded a match-high 12 kills in addition to an assist, nine digs, and two blocks. Way and Velenza recorded seven kills apiece; the former also recorded a dig, while the latter also provided an assist, an ace, eight digs, and a block. Sophomore setter Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.) offered a team-high 20 assists, while senior libero Indira Rojas (Coamo, Puerto Rico) recorded a team-high 18 digs.

Gelfan and Callahan recorded all of their points with kills, each also added a dig. Byxbee totaled five kills, two aces, and nine digs. Junior setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) was a major contributor for the Griffins as well with a kills, 20 assists, an ace, and a dozen (12) digs. Reno supplied four assists and an ace in excess of her team-high 15 digs.

The Chestnut Hill College women's volleyball team continues their non-conference schedule tomorrow, Saturday, September 16, with a 5:00 p.m. match versus Queens College.
