Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/13/2018) – The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season continued today for Chestnut Hill College, who stayed local for a league match at the University of the Sciences (USciences). In victory, the Griffins offered a balanced attack as senior setter
Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) supplied 41 assists to four teammates who scored double digit kills in a 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 17-25, 25-16) triumph over the Devils. Sophomore middle hitter
Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) led the Scarlet and Gold's high-scoring quartet, offering career-highs in points (16.0) and kills (14).
USciences (6-14, 4-9) emerged from a competitive start with a 14-10 lead in the opening set, but behind the play of Sutton and Baldwin, Chestnut Hill College (7-15, 4-8) rallied to tie the frame at 17-17. It remained tied at 24-24 thanks to a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Corrine Kalala (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), which subsequently galvanized the Griffins for the final two points of the set, 26-24 (1-0). The Devils responded by pacing a tight second set. But the narrative changed late, when Sutton sighted Baldwin, junior outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.), junior middle hitter
Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.), and freshman right side
Lauren Lipinski (Gilbert, Ariz.) to outrun the home team to 25-22 end (2-0). USciences finally broke through in the third set, where they controlled play at 12-7, 21-13, and eventually 25-17 (2-1). Chestnut Hill College made up for their lapse in the fourth set as they disposed of the Devils in a 25-16 (3-1) conclusion that saw seven kills (7K-1E-10TA, .600) from Baldwin and a dozen (12) assists from Sutton.
Freshman setter Caelin Jaskot (Mahwah, N.J.) fueled USciences' efforts with 35 assists, four kills, three aces, and 14 digs. Benefitting from her play, senior outside hitter Elizabeth Checca (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and junior outside hitter Sarah Miller (Harpursville, N.Y.) both reach double digit kills; the former offered 11 kills, an assist, an ace, 12 digs and two block assists, while the latter totaled 10 kills, 12 digs, and a block assist. Two others recorded double digit digs, freshman defensive specialist Danielle Taylor (Mount Holly, N.J.) was one of them, offering a team-high 21.
Baldwin's 14 kills came on a .321 (14K-5E-28TA) hitting percentage. She also recorded two digs and four block assists. Lipinski finished with 11 kills, while Byxbee and Callahan each offered 10; the last two posted double-doubles with 17 and 12 digs, respectively. Junior libero
Janie Green (Hayes, Va.) captained the Scarlet and Gold defense with a career-high 27 digs.
