Chestnut Hill College Closes Out Clippers in Three Sets

Philadelphia, Pa. – (10/25/2018) – Chestnut Hill College made short work of Concordia College (NY) is this evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition as senior setter Kennedy Sutton (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) led the Griffins to a three set, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) victory over the Clippers. Sutton totaled nine points (5 kills, 4 aces) and supplied 24 assists to facilitate a .238 (38K-14E-101TA) team hitting percentage and help Byxbee to a team-high 12 points (9 kills, 3 aces).

Chestnut Hill College (9-17, 6-10) scored the first seven point of the evening, 7-0, and owned a 20-10 advantage before Concordia College (1-19, 1-15) called their second timeout of the opening set. After the break, the Griffins continued their march to a 25-12 victory (1-0). The Clippers controlled the start of the second set as they held an 8-5 advantage before freshman defensive specialist Venessa Caballero (San Dimas, Calif.) served the Griffins to a 10-8 lead. The Scarlet and Gold advanced their position to 15-9 on Sutton's succeeding serve, establishing enough of a cushion to outlast the Clippers to a 25-19 end (2-0). The third set was competitive throughout with Chestnut Hill College pacing Concordia College to a 14-14 timeout. The Scarlet and Gold separation came soon after as Byxbee served for seven straight points in a concluding 11-6 run, 25-20 (3-0).

Senior middle blocker Derilis Valerio (Perth Amboy, N.J.) led Concordia College with nine points, scoring a team-high seven kills and four block assists. Senior setter Bianca Ortiz (Ponce, Puerto Rico) was a major contributor as well for the Clippers with three kills, 13 assists, an ace, and 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Camila Rabassa (Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico) helped her on the defensive end with 10 digs.

Bxybee was one of five Griffins to score five kills or more; she recorded a .273 (9K-3E-22TA) hitting percentage, but was not the Scarlet and Gold's most efficient hitter as junior middle hitter Cassie Callahan (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore middle hitter Ragen Baldwin (Lancaster, Pa.) respectively hit at .421 (8K-0E-19TA) and .400 (7K-1E-15TA) success rates. Sutton added a dig to her five kills and team-high four aces. The Griffins totaled 13 aces in all and were led defensively by junior libero Janie Green (Hayes, Va.), who offered 16 digs.
