Holy Family University (24-5, 16-1) sprinted out to a 16-7 lead, which they later extended to 21-9, before holding off Chestnut Hill College (9-18, 6-11) in a 25-16 conclusion (1-0). The Tigers continued to control the match with the first five points of the second set, 5-0. The head start was enough to keep them in the lead the rest of the way in a 25-18 end (2-0). Another fast start gave Holy Family University an 8-1 edge in the third set. Chestnut Hill College responded with a 9-3 run that trimmed the deficit to a single point, 11-10. Unfortunately, that is as close as the Griffins would get with the Tigers outscoring the Scarlet and Gold 14-7 the rest of the way in a 25-17 finish (3-0).
Senior middle hitter Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa.) headlined Holy Family University's offense with 17 kills, seven aces, and two block assists (24.5 points). In addition to the offense provided by Callahan, Baldwin, and Sutton, junior outside hitter
Reily Byxbee (Madison, Conn.) was a factor with four kills, two assists, and 10 digs. As a senior captain and four-year starter, Sutton ranks among the program's top-20 all-time in 14 statistical categories and serves as the all-time leader in both assists (1
st, 3,464) and assists-per-set (1
st, 8.07). She was a 2016 CACC All-Tournament performer, earned All-CACC Third Team honors in 2017, and currently resides only 36 assists shy of 3,500 for her career – more than twice any other player in program history.
Chestnut Hill College will conclude their 2018 home schedule on Wednesday, October 31, when they host Felician University in a 7:00 p.m. CACC match.
